83 tranfer case into an 87

I am looking at buying a transfer case from an 83 4x4 and swaping it into my 87 runner 22re 5sp.

runner has:

w56 trans with what I think is gear driven top shift case.

the donor vehicle is an 83 pickup. Now according to 4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/ the 83 should have an L52 trans that is attached to an RF1A case which should be a top shift gear driven case? can anyone verify that this will work for my 87 runner? I have not seen the truck yet but assume its's a 5 sp 22R. Just using the transfer case to attach to my stock w56,

any help is appreciated!

might want to check but i think your t-case is a forward shift and not a top. they will bolt up but you will need to cap the forward shift shifter hole.
this is all of course just memory i could be totally wrong

if there something wrong with the one you have in there? I am not aware of any advantages that the 83 might have over the 87 gear driven. Pretty much the same case.

89-95 W56 had a forward shift same as the g-series trans. 85-88 W56 had a top shift same as the L series trans.

Yes mine is an 87 so it would be the top shift, Im positive on that.

I have a crack at the fill bolt from when I bought the truck. The guy I bought it from 5 years ago claims that a cheapo oil facility torqued the fill bolt to much. So it has been leaking slowly for years. I am just ready to replace it and I found one for 75.00 but its out of an 83.

My understanding is it should bolt right up and be exactly the same except for the driveline flanges. These would have to be swaped from my existing case?

I just wanted to make sure it is an exact swap and by the looks of it, it should be good, just needed a second opinion!

If its worth anything, I am reading the 4x4wire site the same way you are. Good point on the output flange.
Only thing not covered is the t-case mount, but if it's the same case......

yea I am not sure about the mount either, I will have to check. they guy I am buying it from says it will work no problem, and he does work at a shop, but that doesn't really sell it in my mind. I will check about the mount, thanks for the heads up!

well after some more research, over at MC transfer case bible, I found that this set up probley wont work for the following 2 resons:

83 has a short low range shift rod as well as a c-clip retained 2/4wd shift rod

the 87 has a long low range shift rod as well as a HOOK retained 2/4wd shift rod.

now these may very well work with some modification, however I am not up to the task of finding out since this is my daily driver.

Did you use the shifter from the 81 or the 87? I assume the 81.

I went and looked at the transfer case yesterday and for all intents and purposes, it seems like it should bolt right up. I still am not sure about the Low range shift rod lenght ect but since that is all internal I suspect it would be fine.

When looking through the shifter hole in the tranfer case, I noticed that the rod looked to have an angle to it for the shifter seat to set in, however my 87 is more of a square notch. I was not to impressed with the T/c condition however so I am going to pass on it, but it's still nice to know that it should bolt up and work!
