4Runner starts and then immediately dies

Hey guys, so I started my 4Runner this morning, and after it started, I heard a strong hissing noise and after a few seconds it died. My initial thought was that I must not be getting enough air through my MAF. I took a quick glance over everything, and it all checked out. If i give it gas, it does stay running, which still makes me think it's an air issue. I'm using an '82 Supra MAF and a cone filter attached to that. If you guys have any suggestions as to what might be going wrong, I would be very appreciative.

Thanks,
Andy

Check the tubing going to the throttle body of cracks and being loose.

That's what I checked briefly this morning (I didn't have much time to check it thoroughly though). I'll give it another look this afternoon. Do you know of anything else it could be that I could check while I'm in there?

was it a sucking hissing sound or a blowing hissing sound?

Well guys, I had the opportunity to check out everything this weekend, but couldn't find a solution to my problem. I tried starting it again and it did the same thing as it did before. I checked out all of my air intake tubing and the like, and found no issues there. I decided then that it must be something to do with my MAF, so i unplugged it and tried starting it, it did the exact same thing as it did with it plugged in. I can keep it running by giving it some gas, but she runs really roughly. Does this mean that it has to be my MAF or could it be something else like a fuel filter issue? My 4Runner is my DD so i really need to get all of this resolved quickly. Thanks to everyone who has responded, it means a lot.

It's not likely to be a fuel filter. The pump runs at a constant rate; if you can't get enough fuel to idle, "giving it gas" would make it worse.

The fact that you can get it to run (at all) with the VAF disconnected is really odd; the fuel pump should shut off as soon as let go of the key without the VAF. This suggests that however the '82 Supra MAF was installed changed a lot of wiring. I'm not there, so I can't help you with that.

How often will an MAF go bad? Is it a regular occurrence? I haven't had any problems with the wiring for the past year or so, so i can't imagine it'd be that. Is there anyway i can check the MAF to see if it's bad or not, with a voltmeter or something?

Of course. Do you have the Factory Service Manual for the '82 Supra?

I wish I did, but unfortunately I don't. I'll do a little searching though and see what I can find. Thanks for all your help.

Ended up finding this site, while not an 82 AFM, I think this should work... hopefully. Time to go buy a voltmeter.
