C'mon if mmcpeck has other priorities and the means to pay someone else to do the work why hate on him. I have the ability to work on my truck as well, and I do a lot, but here in Mass when it's freezing(and as I get older) I find myself cursing it. I'll still do a lot of my own work but I'm not near as enthusiastic as I was when I was younger. That said props to MAK92-4RNR for the job he did on his 3VZE, I can imagine it wasn't fun as I've owned a few of those.

Update:

Finishing my exhaust completely at 8:30 today. I found out that the rattling noise is the fact that I have absolutely no backpressure. Im putting my stock catalytic converter back on to have some restriction. So no more straight pipe. I'll do a video of how it sounds with the catalytic converter back on. It was fun while it lasted, but I cant hear people in my back seat if im anywhere past 3k RPMS... ( 65 mph is 3k rpms ) so I just get a huge roar. I expect it to still be load with just the stock cat on, so hopefully we'll have no disappointments haha

and... its quiet again... really quiet. barely sounds like i have an aftermarket exhaust on it.

I cant risk driving around without a catalytic converter. California just raised all the fines here. I had fun while it lasted, its not a big deal. I still have the horsepower gains, more backpressure, and a much quieter ride.

Nah, i'm leaving it how it is for now. I had no backpressure, so its nice to actually have some now. It will not be quiet for the rest of its days... it'll have a smog legal and stamped high flow cat eventually!

Update:

I feel like i've lost all love for my 4runner now that I changed the exhaust. I loved the uniqueness it had with the exhaust and Im going to be changing it back to 100% innerchangeable with the stock catalytic converter. I'll smog it with the cat on, then pull it off and keep it stored in the truck. but I cant stand the quietness im dealing with now. I'll post videos of how it sounds in the truck and what not for those who want to know, but I hate it...

by the way, did anyone with Doug Thorley headers have a resonating problem in the Y pipe of the truck? Mine has been since i bought and installed them. and DT wont send me a replacement one because I welded the pipes instead of using the flanges......

i dont have ANY type of headers on my pickup, but i do have the cat off into dual sidepipes ahead of the drivers rear tire, and i have the rattling noise your talking about, and i think its simply because of the lost backpressure, unless something was not welded fully or a loose hanger? im not knocking the muffler shop but its possible lol

Whatever happened with your o2 sensor? I had the exact same symptoms with a high idle and the cel coming up as a code 25 (lean mix).

I know my o2 sensor is bad but the problem I have is the damn o2 sensor mount on the exhaust somehow broke off... has this ever happened to anyone??? hard to believe that weld would fail....

so... does anyone know where I could get just that section of pipe. I believe It bolts on at the end of the headers and goes to the cat. tried looking online but couldn't find just that section that has the o2 sensor mount.

MaK92-4RnR--- do you have that section from your stock exhaust still?? I'd buy it from you, There's no 2nd gens in any of the pick and pulls around me.

check ebay 2nd gen- i think i saw a piece that was flanged on one end and bolted to the headers. i saw one on there that was an old downey piece, but i cant remember the store name on there sorry. maybe search store name "the tojo man" or seller name and he has full sets of downey headers. i know you already have the headers but he might know where you could find that piece. hope this helps

Engine code shortly after installing headers

Mak did you ever deduce your engine code?

If not - paper clip it, and watch the blip sequence. I'm confident it may be an EGR issue; possibly temp sensor which is likely after modifying headers or exhaust.

A couple months after adding headers, exhaust, and intake to the 3VZE it started CEL'ing w/ code 71 intermittent intermittently. After troubleshooting I found the EGR temp sensor is bad. Rather than wasting money replacing the useless sensor, I soldered a 10ohm resistor at the female end of the 2-pin connector which deleted the code. Last weekend I did away with the emissions opening up my engine bay a bit more and ultimately increasing HP and gaining roughly 2MPG! (according to a 3 month average). This is a big deal man handling 33's in a 3 liter.

PS - Your exhaust sounds really good, add more intake and let that sucker breathe.

weird? mine was just the o2 sensor. its currently off and running great. I added the catalytic converter back. unfortunatly i cant remove the emission systems, I live in california

my truck actually has an ISR mod. but im thinking of modifying it with an open cone filter instead of the stock air box.

Emissions or not, your $H!+ sounds very good. My setup sounds (compared to your audio) a bit quieter but deeper tone that maintains true and rich from the start-up to throttle with a slightly different setup. I eliminated the cat and have a glass pack/presilencer bullet which goes from 3", expands to 4", and back to 3" before flowing to a dynomax super turbo muffler. Here is what it looks like:

I'll need to do something about the so called "stainless" exhaust system. Damn Minnesota winters seemed to stain the s#$% outta mine in a hurry.

So MaK92-4RnR, i read your post (few months ago, before christmas) and I wanted to get myself some real bad, which i ended up doing, and the headers ran great, however, a month ago my truck caught fire and was totaled, i salvaged the headers, and i hate to do this i feel like im ruing the thread, but if anyone is interested in purchasing some headers, they are used, and i had to sawzaw the pipes apart, however you should be able to weld those back together, or have a muffler shop do it pretty cheap, if anyone should be interested pm me
