Nice man. I have stop reading at around page 5. I want to see how your mileage gone so far. Did you have the time to change your 02? I would like to see the mileage after you replace the 02... What scared me is that the smog guy will not except your header to do the emission test... Some will not test it if it is not the original. Some will and hopefully it pass.

As promised, I told everyone I'd get some videos of my stock catalytic converter on with my exhaust set up... here they are. Hope you all are as satisfied as I am haha

the headers are stamped and smog legal. they have the right to refuse service, but if you're running correct emissions, they will pass... i confirmed this with DT before i ordered them. plus its illegal to buy non-emission products in california, not like it has ever stopped anyone.

Guardian Saint - What a nightmare emissions must be. I suggest moving to a different state These trucks are guaranteed more fun after the performance upgrades. It was a little depressing mashing around a 98 Eldorado Northstar and then adding a badass runner to the collection only to find out how slow (stock) these things really are. Depending on how mechanically inclined you want to be; I'm confident that after you pass your next emissions and do performance upgrades, you will be thoroughly satisfied, even if it means reverting back to stock headers/intake at next emissions.

Best,
Ben

lol it sounds the same... except its not as loud. I dont think you understand the fine if i get caught without a catalytic converter... lmao my truck gets impounded, dude. then after that I get an impound fee, and a ticket, that i need to take to court, so i would have to pay the impound fee, the ticket, and the court fees... I dont know exactly how much it would be, but it would be in the thousands dollar range.

lol you do understand if i DONT pass smog I cant drive my truck? lol a gutted cat will not pass smog... if I dont have a catalytic converter, my o2 sensor will eat it...

a high flow catalytic converter is like 400 bucks... one that will pass smog, anyway.

Mak,

Why does your truck eat the O2 sensor with no cat? My cat checked out a couple of weeks ago, pulled in my driveway and it sounded like someone was shaking a box of rocks under the truck.

I took it to the exhaust dude and he said "you got two choices... 1) I can sell you a new catalytic converter and replace what you got for about $125 with a magnaflow universal, OR 2) I can cut that faulty cat out and weld in a pipe for $40. He specifically noted that the O2 sensor is before the cat so it will not hurt a thing.

So far after a couple of weeks of driving, no CEL's no adverse effects at all... just improved mpg. Why is your's eating O2 sensors with no cat? Is it the combination of no cat with headers?

In CA there is a pre cat 02 sensor and a post cat 02 sensor unlike other states that just have the pre cat o2 sensor.

my CEL comes on periodically, also my truck only has a pre cat o2 sensor. its 92. the only vehicles i've seen with 2+ o2s is 95+ years. due to putting headers on, my truck now has a new O2 sensor location, which is at the Y - pipe. Is there anyway to tune the O2 sensor to the new temperature that it gets so that the CEL stops coming on? instead of being on the downpipe like it is on stock vehicles, mine is on the Y pipe, right under the driver's seat.

It's possible that your 4runner is not originally from CA then. My 89 has 2 sensors, one pre and one post cat.

Interesting. My O2 sensor is right in front of the cat and thus roughly right under the driver's seat already in the stock setup. I wonder if I am going to have the same issue when I install headers. In Tennessee you don't have to have a cat, so I was planing to go straight from the Thorley Y-pipe O2 bung back to a Flowmaster 50 and out. I'll let you know how it turns out and whether it generates CEL's when I get'r'dun.

Mine too is under the drivers seat on the down pipe. The idea that running with out a cat will kill a pre cat O2 sensor is not correct.

You can get magnaflow high flow cats for $90 that will pass smog (we have the same dyno smog test here) and I have passed with no problems.
