22RE replacement engine?

I've searched through hundreads of posts and all I can find is a bunch of 22RE haters or folks that feel it nessecary to spend $3500 or more on D.O.A or LCE. I love my 22RE it has served me well for 389,432 miles and would like to go with another engine that will last as long since the truck has no rust on it and I plan on hanging on to it for a while longer.
The question I have is, does anyone have suggestions on which one of the hundreads of 22RE engine builders should I go with. I've been searching for months and it seems like everyone does a cut & paste on the reviews and changes the names. I want to here from folks that have done a replacement on an 89 4Runner or similar truck. Who you went with, problems you ran into, results you got out of it. I'm doing this as soon as I get back from vacation in a few weeks so if you've got links, pics, tips, actual real world hp and tourque gains I would appreciate it.
By the way it's an 89 4Runner with an A/T.

I've searched well over 50 threads on here as well as various other forums on the web. I've also read reviews and posts from rebuilders web pages as well. I just want the best recomendations out there and this seems to be the place to get those recomendations.

well, does it HAVE to be a complete engine ready to just drop in?

if you feel like a rebuild is something you have the time, skill, and patients to handle, check out engnbldr. Great prices on quality parts (my parts should be arriving from him early this comming week for my rebuild in progress), but I don't believe he retails complete motors. You COULD call and ask him, but I doubt it.

I wouldn't be against the idea of rebuilding but when I took the head off to look around I noticed some things that I didn't like. I asked a good machine shop in the area and they must have mistaken and thought I wanted to buy the shop from them or something. At this point I'd rather just part with about $1500 and be done with it.

Be wary of ATK rebuilt engines. They COULD build it well if they wanted to, but on the 22RE I got from them in Oct of 2003(the selling point for my mechanic was the 3 year or 30K mile warranty), they obviously had chosen not to. Replaced it after 60K miles. There's gotta be some decent rebuilt engines out there...trouble is, you can't tell just by looking at them OR by the warranty they offer. The very best of good luck to you... -KB-

I saw one on ebay from motorcrate engine sales. They have good feedback and the best waranty I've ever seen. The problem is that it looks too good. I know the price is right. Have any of ya'll tried this one or heard anything about them. I hope to get some feed back on this cause I'm going to be buying one as soon as I get back from my trip.
