22R same as 22RE?

I am looking at picking up an 87 4runner that needs an engine. I have a line on a rebuilt 22R. Is the only difference between the 22R and RE the injection system where one is carb and the other injected?

Thanks

RE=fuel injected
REC=fuel injected, california emmissions
R= carbed unless fuel injection was swapped onto the block but you should hopefully be able to tell.

Thanks....It sounds like it should be a pretty easy swap to put the efi stuff from a donor truck on a carbed engine.

Short answer: You should be OK as long as the donor motor is 85 or up. 84 or earlier is different.

Gotcha...are the accessory holes different? Does anyone know of an FAQ that explains the difference between the different model years?

Maybe I just better stick to an engine that is around the year of the Runner.

I'd stick with a carb. easier to work on, and impervious to EMP's

And if you live in CA you won't pass smog if you run the carb because the 4runner I am putting it into came with EFI.

85 to 95 22RE's were all the same ie heads etc. And EFI system will bolt right up. Not certain before 85, but suspect the intakes will interchange.
