22R Engine
I bought a 1986 2wd longbed pickup with manual. I don't know if it's a 4 speed or 5 since the previous owner blew the bottom end of the engine and the truck is not drivable. That's the least of my worries. I bought another 22R with an auto transmission mated to it. This replacement 22R came from a 1970's Chevy Luv. I heard it run before I bought it and made sure of it.
The problem that I came across is now that I have the engine and tranny in my 86, being that my truck is a long bed, the intermediate shaft's yoke has 21 splines and the automatic transmission has 23 splines.
Can anyone tell me what year model the replacement 22R and tranny came from? Since this truck will be my daughter's first car/truck, she wants it automatic. And maybe down the road convert it to manual when she finally gets her license.
I tried contacting the local dealership and they just gave me the run-around and said they couldn't help me. Any ideas, advise?

no kidding. I ran into this guy who wanted to tub out this 1974 Chevy Luv. It had this 22R in it. He said he bought the truck from this guy with intentions of making this Luv a drag truck. Therefore, he didn't have any need for the 22R. I also noticed that he stripped off a bunch of emissions stuff and the fuel pump was not in the original location. It had a flange in place of it since the Luv had a fuel pump upstream somewhere. The fuel pump from my original engine should bolt right up. As you can see I have a lot of work ahead of me. I thought I'd tackle the driveline issue then to the emissions and vacuum lines that go to nowhere and the only way for me to get started is to identify the year model that replacement 22R is. That way I can look at the emissions and vauum diagram on the manual.
Another pretty interesting thing I saw was that 22R bolted right up to the chevy luv without modifications. or prefabbed motormounts and brackets.

Few things here catch my attention. You dont know if the transmission is a 4 or 5 speed because the motor is blown? .... Ok you dont need the motor to tell what transmission you have. =/
And most 2wd had 4speeds.
Second... a 22R is basically.. well a 22R. There a variants, of course but the basics are the same on all of them. If it's got a lot of hoses/emissions... and runs like crap... start capping that stuff off. These motors are very simple if you don't overthink things.
You will want a mechanical pump, you said the mech pump was removed and capped off. Autozone has a good cheap pump for 40 bucks. The carbs were designed to run off a mechanical pump.
My reccomendation. Just swap in this new/used 22r into your rig and leave the the manual tranny, ditch the automatic (they suck anyways). You can pull those motors EASILY with tranny/motor together. For the manual, drain the tranny of fluid before removing because the have a output shaft and will leak all of the fluid if you tilt it far enough.
not sure what else to say, I'm lil baffled at this question. 22r's varried year to year, no specific year to stamp on it will help you. sorry mate

thanks for the advice drew33. I'll see if I can mate the replacement 22r with my manual transmission and deal with the emission issues as I go. It looks simple enough. By the way, I dumped the old bench seat and put in a set of bucket seats from a 90 Acura Integra. They look pretty cool and comfortable to sit on.

you will definetly be able to put the manual in place of the auto, besides your rig is already setup for a stick shift, putting an auto in would be a b eye t see H.
Should be an easy swap. I just put a rebuild back in our 87 2wd earlier this week. I think it's easier to take out/install the motors with the transmission attached.

I started separating the transmission from both engines yesterday. They're on the garage floor waiting for me to do more work. While I'm at it I might as well replace the clutch.
I'll mate my original manual tranny to the replacement 22R and then drop it in. I'll see if I can put some time aside this weekend and work on it.
Just for the heck of it, I'll see if I can rebuild the original engine and make it more high perfomance. I'll post another thread on that later. For now, I just want to get my truck on the road within a short period of time.
