22r or 22re
Ok i posted this on ttora and customtacos to see what they thought over there, so now im just seeing what you guys think over here.
Ive started looking for a new little commuter truck and one of my friends has a truck with the 22r in it and he wants to trade. I was wondering how well the little carbed engines are. I was also wondering if they are easy to build up like the 22re and if there is lots of performance parts for them.
Basically what im askin is should i get the 22r or wait and get a little truck with the 22re.
P.S. its 2wd so i dont think i need to worry about extreme angles cause the most it will see probably is the pismo dunes or similar things.

22re has a slight performance advantage as well as an efficiency advantage over a carb.. Slight.
They are basically the same engine. (not all parts interchange, but generally perf parts available for one work on the other)
The 22r -> 22RE conversion isn't impossible, but it's not easy either.. decide if EFI is important to you.

21mpg in both our 22r rigs. The 2wd and my 4wd ..
thats comparable to a 22re. If the engine is running right and healthy MPG isnt an issue. You might notice some more oomph from a 22re but nothing to care about IMO.
I'm going to do the EFI convr on my 4x4 because carb isnt good on hills. It's scary infact lol
If the price is right, and its 2wd and a commuter then 22R is FINE! ours has 212k on it and i just rebuilt the carb and it runs perfect again.
go for it =)

The different deck heights only apply to the pre 85 22R's. The 85-95 blocks are identical wether or not it's EFI. It's still not a "simple conversion" but it is probably doable.
The biggest thing with the Carb that I remember on the two that I had was that I would have to pump the ☺☺☺☺ out of the accelerator starting it in the morning. It would be fine after that. They were loosing their prime it seemed. I never took them apart to fix them since it was gone after the 1st start of the day.
I wouldn't be scared of either one. It just depends on the deal. If I were shopping around, I would prefer the EFI but if I came across one that was a great deal, I wouldn't turn it up because it had a carb.
