1988 4 runner that just wont start

so here is the deal i just received a 1988 4 runner that needed alot of work and i thought i could handle fixing up this old 3.0 but then i realized that it was alot more work than i thought first i thought that it was a bad fuel filer so i went out and got on and put that in and it still wouldn't start so then i decided to try plugs because they looked like the plugs from 88 that where in there still didn't want to turn over it sputters then dies so i decied to start taking it apart i checked the timing the spark on all the wires i riped the air intake manifold of and put stating fluid directly into the pistons still nothing i have no idea what is wrong can any one help me

The valve timing is right but your not sure about the spark timing. Also tell them about the error messages we were getting

Get the FSM (Toyota manual, not Haynes or Chiltons), and start with the trouble shooting procedures in it. The EFI section will tell you how to read the codes off the ECU.

first.. try pulling any codes. Takes 5 mins and all you need is a paper clip and your computer to decifer the codes.

Just from numerous experiences working on fuel issues on the 22r/re and 3.0.
it sounds like your Mass air flow sesnor is bad.. why that is causing you to not start is simple.

I had this issue once and took a look at the electirical wiring diagram. The Mass air flow sensor kicks the fuel pump on, something about it makes sure there is enough air....

Anyway, if your sir flow sensor is bad.. then you can check.. and get the truck to start by going to your engine jumper box. Its a little grey box not more that a 1 to 2 inches wide right with your engine relay boxes.

You want to short fp+ to B+...connect the two with a piece of wire. What you have now done is taken the air flow sensor out of the equation and sent power directly from your battery to the fuel pump. It wont hurt your truck... I drove around forever till I could get a mass air flow sensor.. they are hella expensive.

If it dosent then start.. well crap.. more serious issues.

It should only take you like 5 minutes to do this..if its a sluggish start.. maybe a little cold start in there will help it out.

Let me know if you are confused, or need help.

Oh and it sounds exactly like what my 90 3vz v6 did.. I spent a couple days dropping the tank thinking, ok.. fuel pump.. then ok clogged fuel fliter.. then, ok no spark.

Took me forever to figure out.. STUPID MASS AIRFLOW SENSOR. SO, im hoping my wasted time will help you out.
