so i broke my 4x2 tranny... have no clue what it is... think its a w55 or a w56

i jsut removed the tranny and its sitting on the floor... well i was thinking.... according to my fsm, the only thing that looks different between a 4x2 and 4x2 is the back half.... there is either a 2wd shifter on it or looks to be a tcase..... does this mean if i disconnect the housing of the 4x2 that i can bolt it onto a 4x4 tranny? and it will work the same?

is a 4x2 version, looks liek it seperates in 4 pieces, bell housing, tranny, intermediate plate and rear housing

the 4x4 looks to be about the same bell housing, tranny, intermediate plate, then tcase

would i be able to jsut buy a 4x4 tranny and intermediate plate, and easily bolt on my rear housing for the 4x2 and my bell housing?

both pictures are a w56, but one is 4x2.... is there any way to actually determine what tranny i have? i can go take pictures if needed.....

a friend jsut brought up a point that might break or make my idea work... what about the length of the output shaft... is the 4x2 different from the 4x4?

i am almost positive my truck has a w56 2wd tranny. unless the w55 appears exactly the same?....
