What Tranny Do I Have?

my truck is special.... its an 85 4x2 and seems to have a bunch of parts peopel say it doesnt have... i have confirmed it has a g662 rear end, which is an 8" rear with 3.07 gears and 2 pinion.. engine is a 22r, late model.. the truck is a RWD truck only... so no transfercase.... the vin plate says w46, but that is a 4speed... my truck has a 5 spped... everywhere i have looked, i havent seen any mention of a 5 speed in a 4x2 that wasnt a 89+.... anyone know what model tranny i actually have? also i have looked through the pictures on marlins site, and the 89+ 5 speed doesnt look like the 5 speed my truck has

my best guess would be a 2wd W series 5 speed from either another pickup or a celica.

it doesnt look like the tranny of the 89-95 2wd pickup....

got any pictures of the celica one? is there a way visually to tell what model it is...

it isnt i dont know who did the modifications, it is that it does have a 5 speed and nowhere can i actually find info on what the tranny is.....

my truck might even lie and it could be original, everyone here on yotatech said i had a 7.5" rear end, but i kept digging and it is definately a 8" rear end sua single axle 5 lug axle

My father had a 83 or 84 22re that was 2 wheel drive and had a 5spd, so it does exist. Im looking at a haynes manual and im thinking you either have a g57,g58 (2wd versions), the 84-86 carbs have a g52 but that is only 4 wheel drive. According to this book the only 2wd trannys are: the L series, g40, g57, and the g58. The Lseries is only 83 and earlier, and the g40 is 4 speed by the looks of it, so that only leaves the g57 and g58. I think the g58 is only available from 89-95 with add (true for 4wd at least) while non add 89-95 have the w series (4wd). So Finally that only leaves the g57. Now this is purely just know facts, looking at a haynes manual, and the process of elimination so i wouldnt take any of it as gospel. Try asking www.marlincrawler.com they only deal with 4wd but they are the best so they may know about 2wd.

don't forget the 2wd W56, the W55, W50, and W45 trannies. i think the W50 may have had a cast iron case.

Yeah i was just going by what the manual said, it didnt say that the w series was a 2wd but i guess it is. Im guessing you didnt always own this truck all along. My guess would be that someone took the 4 speed out and swapped in a similar era 2wd 5spd out of a 22re model because i know they had a 5spd. Once again ask marlincrawler.com they are the foremost expert in toyota 4wd trannys so they should know something about the 2wd

i have looked @ marlins site and done some comparison, and the tranny i have doesnt look anything like the 5 speed offered in any of the 4x2 trucks....

i think you're more likely to have a W55, should look similar to the W56. the W56 was only found in 4x4s and 1 ton 2wds.

how different is the w56 from the w55? why is no information avaialbe on the w55 (well that i have found anyways)

my truck is a 4x2, so that rules out being a 4x4 tranny..... the tranny i have does look liek the picture marlin has on their site showing a w56 2wd.... is there a way to idnetify it on the case?

Start looking around for a donor truck, I am sure there are a lot around. Would you have to covert your front brakes or front suspension at all? Solid axle or IFS?
