Chilkat mounts, wiring, and W59 tranny bellhousing. It was pretty simple. so simple i did it in the driveway...

The W59 is the tranny in the Tacoma/4runner 5-spd. That bell will bolt onto a G or W series tranny. I had a G52(stock trans) but destroyed it, and swapped in a W56B. Haven't had any problems at all since.

I have about 45K miles on the swap.

ironically enough, i have a 1985 granville 4runner that just started over heating. turns out it was just the bad radiator cap letting the coolant boil at a lower temp. coolant would boil, create air pockets and over heat. i noticed it because when i was driving one night i lost my heat then noticed my temp gauge in the red.
good luck.

so the head gasket is definitely blown.. still debating.. but im considering going with some engnbldr parts. shot ted an email and he was super fast about getting back to me. prices are AWESOME for his stuff. i hope theyre as good as ive heard they are. may go with a different head, or just change the gasket. it mostly depends on what i find when i tear the head off. hoping the bottom end will be fine. i hate to say it but im actually excited about it. ill let you guys know how it goes. if i decide adding new parts to an old motor isnt worth my time and energy, ill work on finding a 3rz to slap in here.

Damn, that sucks man. Yeah, Engnbldr is great, good prices and great service. If you decide to rebuild you may as well upgrade while you're in there, maybe a hotter cam and new timing chain with metal backed guides. If you swap, I think the 3RZ would be awesome. If I ever do a swap in mine that's probably what I would go with, of course the 5VZ is pretty sweet too and you can get a factory supercharger for that one.

You can also get a supercharger for the 3RZ. Both factory and LCE. LCE also offers a turbo kit, which I am thinking heavily on... Just need to find a Marlin bell housing, or a turbo 22RE bell. Then I can put in the R150F tranny I have sitting in storage. Already have the V6 rear...

Anyway, I almost rebuilt my 22R before I did the 3RZ. But I figured it was just to tired, and still only 8 valve. And even a seriously built 22R is only gonna get 130-140hp max. the 3RZ is 150hp stock. Plus to many vacuum/emission/headache components. The 3RZ did away with all that.

And it depends on what kind of shape your old head is in. If its been machined already past what's allowable, then new head it is. If its not cracked and can be machined fine, then rebuild it with Teds stuff.

I would only bother with having it machined if it's warped or if the valve seats are leaky. If it's cracked obviously it needs to be replaced anyways. I don't know how prone to warpage these heads are, but I've never had to deck a head due to it being warped. I think people get a little paranoid about the flatness of their heads. Even if it's perfectly flat, once it gets torqued down then gets hot, then cold over and over again, things are probably gonna move around a bit anyways. Of course I've never had a head be warped WAY out of tolerance before either so maybe I'm just lucky?

Rokblok - That's sweet, I had no idea there were OE superchargers for the 3RZ (though I never actually looked in to it, go figure ). Makes that swap even more tempting. I know you can bolt a turbo on to pretty much anything, but I do like superchargers a little better. From what I understand though, it takes more tuning to get the most out of a SC than a turbo.

And yeah, the 22RE vacuum system is a freakin' nightmare.

I like turbos personally. More efficient, more boost capabilities. Not belt/gear driven, uses engine waste for motivation...

just ordered a head gasket, head bolts, and front end kit with the steel railed timing chain. cant wait to get this started ....... and over with so i can get back to driving it. another question that ive been thinking about.. if there any way to THOROUGHLY clean cooling passages without removing the motor? im pretty sure the po just use a stop leak made for head gaskets. i wana get that crap out.

That sucks! Whoever came up with that crap should be shot. I don't know why people even use that garbage. Laziness/ignorance I guess. I don't know how to get it out other than hot tanking the block. You might be able to get a lot of it using various brushes and flushing it out real good, but it will take some time. Maybe one of those short sewer snake type grabber things with a rag or steel wool in the grabber might work. I don't know, just trying to throw you some suggestions. Have you checked the radiator to see if it's plugged up?

question for anyone who knows; how prone are the heads and block on the 22re to warpage? just want to know what to expect. im just getting ready right now for when my parts get here. took the rad back out, drained everything. tomorrow i MAY take the fan and ps pump, alt, ac comp, and brackets off. but we just got like 5 inches of snow and ice.. lol i worked in that today. after 2 hours my hands were useless. i wish i had a garage. but anyway, anyone who has information about 22re head/block warpage, input would be appreciated.

Good luck, don't freeze yourself. Working on the truck in the rain sucks, but the SNOW!? Hope you don't have any stubborn parts to deal with. Have you done a top end rebuild before or will this be your first?
