Reviving a tired 85 4runner

where im at as far as yesterday. im having problems figuring out the vacuum lines.. alot of the stuff is falling right into place, but some of it is not. i wish i could find a helpful pic.. alot of the pics im finding are just old dirty motors and i cant quite follow the entire line. and theres a bolt in the bottom of the upper intake.. what goes there lol? im running out of bolts..

okay, so i got it running, re-did the vacuum lines, and sealed all the leaks. im about ready to do my first oil change to break the head gasket in. after i got it running i finally started doing other work. i fixed the wiper linkages, the passengers side didnt work before. i also repainted my grill satin black, it looks alright. bought a new horn for it, im gonna hook it up tomorrow. i got a speedo cable from a junkyard today as well. WHAT A PITA. lol. i also painted the snorkel. tomorrow i think ill get it inspected, try and hook the speedo cable up, and get it to quit smelling like cat. the back is FULL of cat hair.. ive vacuumed it out like 3 times and still i find loads of it. but on a more serious note, Theres a loud ticking, and i cant figure out whether its an exhaust leak, or a bearing or something. maybe the valves should get adjusted again with the valve train being removed and everything. any comments on this are welcome. other than that, the gas gauge randomly reads empty. if i hit a bump or something it reads back to normal, but its a lil frustrating. loose ground? i dont know, any idea on that would be appreciated as well.

If the valve cover is torqued down too tight the rocker arms can hit it which could be your ticking.
The gas gauge is probably a loose ground. No idea where you'd find it, but there's not much to it so it should be pretty easy to figure out.
As for the cat hair...pull all the carpet out and set it on fire
. I have the same problem in my vehicles just with dog hair. Once it's in there it doesn't want to come out.

the valve cover is probably torqued way to tight. ill check that tomorrow. by the way. i just re-read the thread, thanks to everyone who's contributed information so far. and the allen bolt goes through the thermostat housing. i also forgot to mention, the vacuum lines were horrible. it took me days, but on the bright side, all of the smaller lines were free because the parts department at my local toyota dealer now knows me by name lol. and the po screwed me over with a broken vacuum port coming off the iac valve, it was tapped and had a new TINY PORT put on, so i took a small piece of vacuum hose and layered heat shrink over it till it fit in the i.a.c. hose connecting to the throttle body. i found some spacers at the yard today and am considering picking up some steelies with some street tires on em. anyone know how much space i need to use ifs wheels on a solid axle?

As far as I know IFS and SA wheels are interchangeable. I guess depending on the backspacing, if it's really deep, there might be a clearance issue but if you can find some stock SR5 or even Tacoma or Tundra wheels I imagine they'd bolt right on no problem.

so i did the speedo cable, works great, turns out theres a difference between an 88 speedo cable and an 85.. but i made it work. and i also hooked up my new horn and repainted the bumpers, same color. loosened the valve cover, it still ticks pretty bad. its noticable at low speeds and when you give it a lot of throttle. also i have a coolant leak somewhere by the thermostat housing :/ also i know that im supposed to change my oil 3 times within 1500 miles of changing the head gasket, and some recommend at 500. well i did mine at like.. 50 lol. the oil is a really strange color. its black, but more of a lighter shade of black? if that makes sense. upon closer inspection, there were TONS of flakes in the oil. im kind of glad i changed it.

thank you a_cent. but i think i found the ticking i was talking about. after further research and the oil change, i think i may have spun a bearing or two. it makes sense. it was sitting, the bearings may have not been well lubricated. im going to drop the oil pan and check them. maybe ordering some bearings from ted. itll blow if its bearings, really questioning hitting putneys/22reperformance up for a new motor.

So i dont think anyone is still following this, but ill let you know whats happened since i was semi regularly posting. I spun a bearing it the bottom end after rebuilding the top end, got pissed, said screw it. new motor. tired of messing with previous owner mistakes and constantly digging back in it to fix something. I contemplated doing it myself, but i just didnt have the tools at my house. Its also very difficult to do it around a work schedule. By the time i would have bought all the tools, machine works, parts, and beer, id be about the same price as a crate motor. So i went the easier route and gave putney's (22reperformance) a call. Snobbds build thread Help me decide to go with them, along with all of their vids on youtube showing their process, and their decent warranty. So after talking to them, they tell me a stage one should do everything i want it too, and recommend that, i was kind of surprised seeing how its the cheaper option but whatever. so i ordered it with the improved headwork, clutch kit, flywheel, upper and lower intake (my upper had like a mm of black goo all around the inside, lower had broken thermostat bolts, po held it on with grey rtv.), exhaust studs, and new injectors. They even had an LC egr delete kit laying around that they threw on by request. They also improve the valve train. The only thing i could REMOTELY complain about is that their shop is so busy its hard to get them on the phone (call 3 or 4 times and you should get someone) and it also takes a while for them to get it out to you in the summer. They're a very busy shop run by like 2 guys it seems and their machines kept over heating due to the summer temps. BUT IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT. Everything is powdercoated for starters. oil pan, valve cover, intake. SO i get the motor finally and i want to make sweet love to it at first glance. After getting the motor installed i did the break in procedure, idle, fluid check, drive the hell out of it, (within reason due to the new clutch). Right off the bat, WOW soooo much more power.. i actually have to be carefully around corners or itll engage my aussie
and I CLIMBED A DAMN HILL IN 5TH GEAR.... 5TH. I was dropping to second before. it sounds better, less vibrations, WAYYYY more power, It looks outstanding. 5 out of 5 for 22reperformance. and NO LEAKS at all. If anyone is interested.. i can post pics.

I'm still following, I never clean out my sub'd folder, lol. That sucks about the old motor, but it sounds like it was kind of a blessing in disguise. You climbed a hill in 5TH!? What gears are you running? I definitely want to see some pics of the shiny new motor, how much $ was it all together shipped?
