latest update:

remember that I was going to be doing the head gasket? I'm there now! a little past actually.

a couple of good videos that I have been going to for this plus the FSM and a Haines manual.

this one is good for the head gasket and timing chain but I had to come back to it after I rebuilt the bottom end.

if I should have to do the head gasket again or timing chain I would do it this way. I like that idea leaving the intake half and exhaust manifold on. I'd have to use the engine lift tho.

Another good video series, from LCE. The source of the block I put in.

another "fix it while I'm there " deals . And you can see it's seen some action too. I know it really isn't a huge piece of protection but one of these factory skids saved my rack and pinion on a Tacoma when driveing down a logging road miles away from the nearest town once . I snapped the bolts to it way back in June so I drilled them out and retapped them while the cross member was off. Much easier to do from above versus below!

a view of the engine rarely seen. Also this was a huge oil and antifreeze leak that I just couldn't get to before .

exactly one month later it's back in.

I had to hit my secret stash of OEM stuff a buddy gave me and finished installing belts and hoses. Today fired it up for the first time! It's alive 😃

a couple more things to wrap up before a test drive. Like the alternator, it died shortly after start-up. On the bright side I fixed the air bypass valve when I fixed the plug to it while replacing the injector plugs . I didn't pay much attention to it before the tear down. It wasn't kicking the idle up when cold then.

So I got it up and running a few days ago and the alternator gave out right off. The charge and brake light came on. I'm like great two whole other problems not associated with the engine. Love old cars they keep you on your toes. 😂 First test drive today.

One replacement alternator later and back in business

Its out of the box.

The old alternator had a hard life with all the power steering fluid on it.

My alternator was just as gooey and failed. The o ring on the top nipple was all it needed. Glad you are on the road again!

I had all kinds of alternator trouble when my PS pump leaked. It would fail fairly quickly, compared to how long they're supposed to last. Once I got the seals and piping for the PS system replaced, bingo! No more leaks, no more alternator failures.
Yaaay!

Yeah the hose leading to the power steering pump is on my list. It's probably original and the fluid is just seeping through it. Currently it's wrapped in plastic and electical tape . It stopped the leak for now. I knew the alternator was on the way out but it was slightly undercharging before the engine rebuild. The Bluetooth device for the cigarette lighter has a voltage read out on it and I noticed a while ago the alternator had trouble keeping up on the highway. Pretty cool to see the actual voltage instead of the needle on the dashboard, which reads out well as long as you know where it's at.

Wait till you see how many thumbs up you get when you add a soft top.
Great job getting the engine out and back in in one month. That’s where a lot of projects die.

I could not really blame anyone for losing hart when at the point of total tear down like that. The idea flashed through my mind from time to time. It's still a bit of a challenge with everything around the engine being original. There is still a list of things I need to change. It's definitely time for all new vacuum hoses and the main radiator hoses are not as good as I thought. New ones are on the way from 22RE performance and a water pump. The water pump moved it's self up on my list this morning . Should have done it when there but I did the oil pump! Oh and the transfer case output seal didn't work out so gotta go back and redo that. On the bright side though all them many other seals worked out. I also swapped the distributor with a nice rebuilt NOS one I picked up about 6 months back.

speaking of tops, I'm working on a way to store it in the garage and use my new engine hoist for lifting it. Get my money out of that.

If you can secure 4 tie downs to your garage ceiling its probably the easiest way I have seen for 1 man to remove the top.

yes that's the best way. I even suggested that to another 4runner owner! However I do go about it I like the idea others have done and take the top off in the spring time and leave it off till sometime in the fall.

New watar pump in and new OEM radiator hoses plus vacuum hoses to the power steering pump. I got this stuff quick thanks to 22RE performance ! I also added the lower fan shroud that I didn't even know was missing till I read it on their site. I love the descriptions on there " This is the part most people are missing (the other guy left it off, right?)" How did they know? The "other guy" did forget to put it back on! Ha ha. 22RE performance is also the place I got the engine gasket set along with the aluminum half moons. That kit had everything including the oil filter cap seal. Once I got the original one out it just disintegrated. Great kit.

My fan shroud lower section, the little strip at the bottom that can be removed separately, was missing when I bought my 4Runner in 95 or so. I cut a strip of sheet metal about the same size and shape, use sheet metal screws to hold it in, and it worked great. You would think that after all this time, I'd try and find an actual replacement...

Good luck!

I believe that the little lower fan shroud section was only included on Trucks with air conditioning. I have not confirmed this, but noticed that Toyota included that piece on the diagram of of the factory "Air Conditioning Kit", which makes me believe that only trucks with air conditioning got this piece. My 1987 Truck never had one that I am aware of. That would account for why so many are missing.

It doesn't hurt to add one on though!

Hardcore and nice engine, Damion!
I wish I had the time and equipment to do it, too. The Truck Shop in Miramar, San Diego cut corners on its rebuild of my engine.
Would you happen to have pictures of the EGR Cooler (Does the 1986 have it?), and location? Reason I'm asking is I'm troubleshooting Running Hot issue here. Saw a post about EGR cooler clogging leads to hot exhaust going back into the intake.
Tnx in advance!
