Question Clunk noise when loading drive train

I can hear and feel a clunk noise when I load the rear drive train.

I an usually feel it when I shift, if I feather the clutch I don't feel it as much.

Any one have any experience with this?

thanks

Have you checked your u-joints for play ? That's the easiest component to check first. Could be other driveline components such as excessive gear backlash etc.

my 81 does that exact same thing too, I greased my U-Joints and no difference, I can't feel any play in them when I mess with em. I guess I need someone to spin a wheel while its in gear so I can see what's going on while I'm under it.
I've looked around a good bit under the truck and the only thing i can figure is that the bushings on the transmission mount look really aged and worn out. I am planning on replacing my cross member sooner than later and hoping that fixes the problem. If not, I guess I'll be altering driveshafts when I swap my W56 in anyways
It did it before and after I replaced the gears in my truck. Not ruling that out, but that definitely isn't the problem in my case.

I found em pretty cheap online like 60 bucks I think. I was planning on just replacing the whole cross member with this
Much better clearance too

well I checked the bolts, and they look to be tight..

I haven't gotten a chance to get under there and yank on the U-joints.. its been raining and the ground is wet..

but I did put in some new NGK spark plug wires and the clunk was gone on the drive to work..

on of the plug wire was loose on the distributor side.

I still want to find some transmission mounts...the Front Range set up looks nice.. but I want gears and lockers first...

jacked up the axle. put it in first gear and released the e-brake to check the front joint(with front tires chocked of course). applied e-brake and put tranny in neutral to check rear joint.

I just fixed the same problem after much headache in troubleshooting. Lube and grease your SLIP YOKES on both driveshafts, it fixed my problem

Well, I have recently lubed all the zerks in my drive shaft, I just did the test and U-joints are fine. I did notice however, that when the rear wheels are off the ground I can feel that the ring and pinion gear have very little backlash play, but the locker allows for about 60-90 degrees of rotation of the driveshaft while the wheels are on the ground and not moving, but if I have the rear end jacked up the wheels will rotate with no play in the driveshaft. I think that my Aussie locker may be the culprit for my bang, as it is very similar to a worn u-joint in how it works.
Has anyone else had this problem? Both my front and rear Aussies do this. Both front and rear were installed professionally by a toyota offroad shop at the same time as the regear.

windedwalrus found a bad u-joint at my rear diff. changed that and lubed the slip yoke and no more clunk. as far as your lockers go that is of the norm. my 4runner had the same issue with a powertrax locker in it and i believe they are built the same. that thing would unload like a bomb! scared the poop out of people in parking lots all the time. kept me laughing instead of getting aggrivated.

I can adjust my driving style to keep it from happening, which is probably a good thing anyways since it's a 30 year old truck. Think it's just a combo of the locker and my clutch bites pretty suddenly. U-joints are definitely fine, and I lubed the whole assembly about 3k miles ago. Maybe I'll hit the slip yoke again, I read somewhere not to over grease it incase you bottom it out suddenly.
