Cleaned 22RE throttle body now won't start - Help!
I just replaced my belts on my 1985 22RE and when I had the air hose off the throttle body I saw the throttle body had quite a bit of carbon on it so I sprayed some carb cleaner in it (I know probably should have used throttle body cleaner instead) to clean it out. Most of it ran back on my rag so I wiped it out and let it air out for about 30 minutes. I went to start it and it fired and barely ran for a second or two. Tried again barely a fire, again and again and now no fire at all. I have cleaned it out before with throttle body cleaner and it always ran rough for a few seconds then ran good. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Welcome. Mark the TPS so you can pull it off and dry it out. Then reassemble. Of course you can reset the TPS after you dry it out but simply marking it will be fine if it ran fine before.

Ok, I will try that in the morning. I just tried starting it again and it at least fired but doesn't stay running. It is about 30° here right now so I am guessing there is some moisture still on the TPS and is not warm enough to completely dry? Do you think that could be it or is probably just dirty?

Check your plugs, also some gunk may have closed off a vacuum port in the TB. Probably would be best to take of the throttle body and intake and clean again clearing out all debris in the ports w/ tps off of course.

The only proper way to clean the throttle body is to remove it from the intake and clean it, just spraying carb cleaner in from the front won`t do much. You also need to check the vacuum ports on the throttle body to make sure there not plugged.

I removed the throttle body, cleaned it and made sure all the little passage ways were clean with some jet carb cleaner. I reinstalled and still won't start. It acted like it wants to by hitting and missing with spark so I have the plugs out now. They were pretty dirty with some fuel on them. Turned it over without them in hoping to get that fuel out of there and letting it evaporate now. Going to replace them with new ones in a few minutes. Any other ideas out there if this doesn't work? Is the o2 sensor next?

Check for air leaks in the intake plumbing. Common to get cracks in the rubber bellows sections. And was the TPS removed from the TB while it was cleaned? If not, the TPS may have gotten cleaner in it (not good). And if the TPS was removed for TB cleaning, was it set properly after install?

I did remove the TPS when cleaning the TB. I just put new plugs in it and it runs great now!! It does have a little better throttle response now so I guess it was due for a cleaning but I think the plugs were the main problem. Thanks for all your help!
