Blower motor died while driving today. Doesn’t work at all, at any speed. Big bummer because I’m going to need it to defrost. Been through the below troubleshooting and didn’t end up finding the problem.

Fuses checked out.

Relays checked out. I swapped the headlight relay and the lights still worked, blower motor didn’t.

Blower motor checked out. Took out the motor, cage and housing were free of debris, hooked it up to 12V 2A and the motor ran freely.

Took out the resistor and this is how it looked.

Not great looking but, the coils aren’t broken. I checked even though I know this isn’t the problem. The motor still won’t run on high.

Here’s me running the control through the different settings. You can hear the relay clicking on and off.

Wiring from the relay to the motor bad? Let me know what I need to look into next. I’m a bit stumped.

 

Did you check the switch itself?

 

No but, the relay is being activated when I run the switch. Doesn’t that imply that the switch works? That was my thinking. Maybe I’m wrong.

 

I can't say for sure because I don't have a wiring diagram to look at. However I just recently had to put one in a 1990 pickup that only worked on one speed, barely. I thought it would be the resister but it ended up being the switch.

If you have a test light or meter you can check power to the blower motor as you cycle through the speeds. I was going to say the relay could still be bad even though it clicks but I see you swapped it. Do you have a good ground?

Agreed, dead end threads do suck. This one’s going to go dead for a bit. I’m heading out of town on Tuesday for Thanksgiving and won’t be back until next weekend. It will get going again, though. I’m not going to let this thing sit all winter without defrost. It will get fixed and I’ll update this thread as I work on it. I may have more questions as I go, though.

 

Anyone willing to help me with some part numbers? I'm looking for the blower speed switch. Everything I've found says it's for a 88-98 pickup. I haven't pulled the one from my pickup but, they look the same from videos I've watched. Can I run the 88-98 switch? Doesn't seem right. Below is what I'm talking about. Looks the same but doesn't say it'll work in an '85. Anyone willing to post a link to the correct switch? Thanks.

 

Try toyotapartsdeal.com and put in your VIN. You can then Google the Toyota part number.

 

I found two different numbers for OEM switches. Which one depends on your VIN. Unfortunately both are discontinued. You can Google the numbers or try eBay. You might find a crossover to an aftermarket one.

Switch Assy, Heater Blower 84732-89108 and 84732-89110

 

I lied. Pass is closed so I can’t leave town. Tore the switch out. Doesn’t look like it’s seen a lot of heat.






Inside didn’t look too bad. Some lubricant of some sort and a little grime.



Cleaned up the contacts and triangle slider and threw it back together.



I’ll go throw it back in the rig and see how it goes. I’m hoping it was just grimy enough to keep it from working. If that’s not it, I’m really stumped.

 

Got everything back together, key on and nothing. I took the motor back out to test it again and this time, no go. First tried 2A, then 6A and not a bit of movement. Will order a new motor and throw it in when I’m back from Thanksgiving. Leaving early tomorrow morning so, this project’s back on hold.

 

At least the switch looks good and is clean now. I know the frustration. Tomorrow I'm having to tear out my entire dash, steering column, drain the coolant and refrigerant in my Ram 2500 just to replace an air door actuator in the A/C unit. I'm going ahead and upgrading all the doors and make sure all is good before reinstalling the unit. I did this once years ago and never want to do it again. Have a great Thanksgiving and drive safe.

That switch you cleaned is nicely built. The one I took out of the 90 was definitely a throw away. The blower motor you took out might be serviceable. Maybe a clean up and a set of brushes, bushings/bearings?? 85 parts are getting hard to find.

 

I hadn't thought of rebuilding it. I ran and grabbed it out of the trash before it went out yesterday. I'm always up for an inexpensive project.
