Question 85 pickup Tranny Swap.

I have a 85 pickup and it has the auto tranny that has the downshifting problem. Well I have been thinking about doing a tranny sway and putting a W56 5 speed in it. I have pedals but I need everything else. What is the price range i'm looking for spend and how hard it is to do and what do I do about the wire harness. I want to do least work prossible. I found a tranny 5 speed near me for $200 Is that a good deal. Also I have a rear Driveshaft and front Driveshaft from a 87 4Runner 5 speed are they the same and will they work for my truck SFA. Where do I get a slave clyinder from and how much do they run for. This is my first time doing anything this big with my truck and its new to me so I just need some guidence. Thanks alot

No clue but you'll have to get a transfer case with it. Also, you'll need a flywheel and clutch kit. I found two Aisin clutch kits for my year truck on eBay. One for my truck and one for my neighbor's 2wd 87. They are working well and were really cheap, around $90 shipped (if I remember correctly).

If you buy a used flywheel get it machined.

I have had pretty good luck on craigslist.org buying some parts. They even have a craigslist for charlotte. Found this trannie w/ TC for $400 (they seem to be cheaper in the Portland Area, I have seen transmission w/transfer case for $300'ish) but at least it gives you a ball park--don't think it is a w56 though

swapping out the tranny is pretty easy. i'd say $200 for a transmission and transfer case is pretty good. I reccommend getting it rebuilt though. your drive lines will work, they are the same manual or auto. youll need to get the manual transmission mount (piece that bolts the tranny to the cross member).the only wiring issue you'll have is getting the reverse lights and the 4WD dash light to work(i never hooked mine up so dont ask me how) and you'll jave to jump the neutral safety switch. you can get the slave and clutch master cylinders at any parts store but you need to find the hydraulic line that connects the 2, parts stores dont carry those and im sure the dealership with charge you an arm and a leg. if you go ahead with the swap and have questions feel free to ask, ill get back to ya soon as possible.

hi! i'm new to this page. i just did my 87 pickup tranny swap from auto to 5 speed. i was just wondering if i can eliminate the computer that is in front of the shifters. i think it was used for the power button. i'm getting a tick tick sound only when i'm in gear and running pedal down if i let go of the gas while is still in gear the sound goes away. any suggestion?
thank you!

You can remove the computer thats in front of the shifter, it was for the automatic and is no longer needed.

My truck has same issue with the downshifting and also needs a full rebuild soooo i was registering my truck the other day and a guy offers me a full engine tranny combo for 750 and its a 5 speed ( which i want baddddd) but heres the deal i dont want to have to replace my whole drive line so im curious if it is a simple plug and play aside for the clutch kit and other 5 speed required stuff

Somehow there is a wire that you ground out to make the computer think it is in neutral all the time. Depending on your skills, it not a bad job. I think you will need the tranny crossmember as well. I switched a 4speed truck with a 5 speed Celica and it was a direct swap. Should be fairly easy.
