Who's replaced their shifter boots?

81 pickup

I need to get both shifter boots for the trans and transfer. They're pretty close together so I'm not sure how the universal generic ones will fit, the base seems pretty large on those. I have to weld in some new metal because the tunnel was cut up and mangled when I bought the truck, so I'd like to find some decent boots with the metal ring and use them to help create my template when I patch the tunnel.

Unless I'm wrong, what I searched around was no one makes factory spec boots. Read some post about nos ones for like $120 something on ebay. Definitely not going that route.

Guess what I'm asking, if any knows, or can measure theirs, those that have the origional, what the size for two aftermarket boots would be. I've seen sizes from 3 1/2-8xx inches in squares, rectangles. Parts stores around here don't really stock them, would have to order it.

I'm in the same boat - mangled tunnel and all. I've found some factory boots on eBay, but even the crappy ones are going for over $100. What I have thought about doing was buying two universal boots and mounting them individually, but the sifters are so close that I don't know if it would work. I've also looked at a couple J-word boots that have the round t-case boot and square shifter boot, but mount independently of each other. The best idea that I have come up with so far was to clean up the tunnel by trimming it to a bigger rectangular shape. I would then weld together some 1/4" x 1" flat steel into in a rectangle to weld on top of the opening in the tunnel so that I could drill and tap it to match the holes in the trim plates of the universal shifter boots that I find. Something like this:

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...erm=shift+boot

Here's a little drawing I did if I wasn't clear above:

I haven't done much more than think of the idea so I'm not sure what will work or fit, but it's an idea for you. In addition to this, I'll be fabricating a custom center console that I may have to integrate with the shifter boot which will also need to integrate with a lower gauge pod to replace the factory gauge pod below the heater vents. Also, I'm planning on doing an bed liner in the interior floors of my truck so I want to make all my fabrication as clean as possible. I imagine that this would probably be easy with carpet since it would be easier to line up the screw holes on the plates and the carpet will hide any lack of welding skills you may have.

I'm no where near that part of my build, but I'm still looking for ideas for when I get to it so let me know what you come up with. Good luck!

I've googled images of those shifter boots. I would just have to find one.

I planned the same thing except instead of using 1x like your picture, I planned on cutting out the two square holes out of a piece of 16ga.

I figure since they are so close together, I'll measure the throw or distance between 1st and 2nd gear, and the same for the transfer; at the height of the tunnel, and see what size aftermarket shifter boots I can find. I've seen some around 3". I'll be doing mine here in the next week or two. Just finished stripping the cab and cleaning it, now I gotta sand all the undercoating type spray that was on it. I'll post pics when I get to it.

EDIT: Did find this too: http://www.redlinegoods.com/Hilux8183shiftboot.php
But I bet it doesn't come with that plastic trim. But still, I can find generic shift boots for $10-$20.

I picked up mine on eBay for $10-$15 IIRC.

Sounds like you've got a workable plan!

Note: On the redlinegoods boot, that "plastic" trim is actually rubber. It's an OEM piece on the trucks. I *might* still have mine laying around. Doubt it though..

Here is what i did. Not the cleanest in the world, but i got the parts for under $30 and got it all done. The floor under them is pretty torn up from a W6 conversion.

Lots of chopped up trucks out there? For my 82 I had the original plate, the boot was junk so got some not too thick vinyl and sewed it like a funnel, sewed a 1/8" nylon rope in top to tie tight to shifter, lasts for years, keeps the noise and air out, costs near nothing if your mom or gal will sew it. Cant have a thick vinyl or it will bend up the plate and wont seal. Change the rubber boots also on the trans & transfer cause you dont see them and if cracked not nice to your bearings and gears running with water and dust.

I sew and upholster, and have taken apart and patterned mine, and am ready to make more if the occasion arises. See thread on this for pricing: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f109...9-83-a-285000/

\

mine is connected at the two tabs up front using the two 10mm bolts and at the rear of the tunnel i added a couple of tabs that you can't see.
plus with the boot pushed down on the rear T/C selector it would have probably been able to hold the tunnel cover in place.

on the stock trim ring there should be 3 holes on each side that correspond with 3 holes down each side of the lever holes in the tunnel.
I believe they had a plastic looking anchor/insert in each hole. sorry mine has been covered for a few years so i don't recall

I'm planning on a leather upper trim boot from Zombie Stomp, but my question is this:

Where can i get a replacement lower main boot for my 83 5spd?

Mine is stamped 58286-95111, which doesn't show up on any search engine or Toyota Parts online. The only similar boot I can find is for trucks up to 1980 and 1984 and later (of course).

I need the part on the left in the pic below. The upper boot would be mounted on the square wire ring on the right.
