Looks like an L52 to me.

Oh and as far as is it any good...well, it's not the strongest tranny Toyota ever made. In fact it's probably the weakest. With big tires especially, they wear out fast. If you're right there and don't mind doing some mods to fit in a later tranny and have the money and all that, it's not a bad idea. I have an L52HD that Marlin Crawler makes which takes care of the weaknesses of the L52 (input shaft bearing), but they aren't cheap...

If your going to put duals in and be changing your driveshaft length, you might as well find a R series to swap in, as they are much stronger

just get a w56 from a 22re truck or 4runner 85-95, for the money they are the strongest 4 cyl transmission. the r151 is stronger, but very expensive.
if u are anywhere near western colorado, i can get u a good w56c for $200

Its either an L50 or L52. To tell if its an L50 the front input shaft housing will have weap whole. Where the L52 will not. That is the only external diff I know of.
Swapping to a W or G series trans will require your front drive shaft to be longer and rear shorter. Its not as simple to just swap them out. I would stick with a L52 and get the marlin HD version. Its brutally strong.

I had a problem with my L50 where somebody actually put the shifter in backwards, so it was pointed off to the passengers side, and it would hit.

L50's etc are not that strong...mine went out a few days ago...didn't like seeing the spline coupler come out on the input shaft of my crawl box:

Edit: Good link on ID'ing toyota transmissions: http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/faq/parts/
