Water plate

Hello from NC. I have a coolant leak from the block plate under the intake. I tried to tighten the bolts and one broke off. What exactly does this plate do and how to I stop the leak once I get the bolt out fingers crossed.
Happy new year also

Thank You
Matt

I know water runs through the intake for emissions purposes I believe. Why that specific plate is there I dont know. Other than for a place for the heater core supply to come from.

I don't think there is. You can get a water block plate from LCE, but that does not stop water from flowing through it. I will hopefully be pulling my intake to fix a water leak on that port in between the intake. I'll get a better look then.

Hi demo, the reason why the coolant passes through the intake the way it does is to prevent carburator freeze off in the cold climate winter like we have here, it is also to help the engine run better sooner because the hotter the intake manifold, the better the fuel atomization, and the better/more efficient the engine will be, it is kind of a anti-polution thing but also a fuel economy thing, so removing it will mean the engine will take longer before you can turn the choke off, and may reduce mpg a bit. On a side note it can also increase power a little but nothing you can feel! I used fipg to seal that plate because I had a leak too with the gasket, don't overtighten or you can bend the plate.

That plate also houses the CMH (Cold mixture heater) which is an electric "hot plate" that heats up during warm up to help heat the fuel mixture and improve atomization while the truck is warming up. Once the coolant reaches operating temperature then the CMH shuts off and the coolant heat takes over. The CMH can be eliminated and LCE makes a block off plate for under the intake that allows for this. Water still passes through the intake, but the CMH is deleted.

I'm assuming that you have a 20R in that truck so this is the block off plate that you would need:

LCE says that the gaskets are no longer produced so they recommend using Ultra Grey RTV to seal it. You should be able use Ultra Grey on your stock plate as well if you plan on using it.

The guys covered it with the block off plate and rtv but I'll add that the 74-78 truck uses a water choke on the factory carb. If you don't have a factory carb, don't worry about it. The factory carb really sucks on the 20R.
