you don't have to worry about breaking anything if you run 36s because the engine doesn't have the powwer to turn the tires with only 3.90 gears

Save your money and do the tires, gears, and lockers all at once.

usual recommendations for 22r (re) equipped toyotas are:
33's = 4.88 gears
35's = 5.29 gears

5.71's are available but seem to have a mixed review. 5.13's are not available. 5.29's with 36" tires would work great for a daily driver/weekend wheeler. I eventually plan to go 5.29's with 37" tires.

That being said, bigger tires/lower gears the truck is not going to be any real speed demon or gas mileage champ. Probably 18'ish. ALso consider upgrading your brakes...your truck is designed for 28" tires.

gears/tires

i have an '81 with 36's and 5.29's and a stock 22r with about 300k+. it turns em easy. i used to have an '88 with 40" swampers, 5.29's and a stock 22re with over 200K and again it turned them easy. i never broke a birf or axle either. im not easy on my trucks by any means i just dont hit holes really hard. my philosiphy,"easy in power out". in my opinion i woulnt go to 5.71's because the pinion shaft is way small and ive heard they brake easy. hope this helps.
