early pickup info

i *might* be able to get my hands on a early 80's 2wd pickup. she doesnt remember which year it is but is pretty sure its an 80 or 81. it doesnt pass smog currently. she said she "put a can of engine cleaner through it" and it still didnt pass. because of it not passing smog she said somehting to the effect of the state of CA is willing to buy it fro her to get it off the road. (has anyone heard of this before?) i am hoping that can get it for real cheap and clean it up, and use it as a DD or back up truck. from what i have researched if its a 80 it has the 20R if its a 81 or later it will have the 22R. it hasnt been driven in years, so i know all the fluid will have to be flushed etc. any thoughts on this? am i getting in over my head?

maybe put a small lift and a locker in and be the next jimbo... haha jk

mom showed me pics of the truck back in the day (its my aunts truck)... it has round head lights, so its an '80. how solid are the 20R?

could be '79-81 if round headlights. think of the 20R as a 22R that will rev higher and you'll never have to worry about the timing chain.

easy to fix, cheap to operate.

Picked it up today!!! pics will follow tomorrow when its light outside. it is a 81, so it has the 22R. Bone stock, exept the bed shell. 228K on the clock. like i said it doesnt pass smog now, but it also has sat in the drive way since 91 with very limited use. looks like i will be on a shopping spree at AutoZone tomorrow

Rebuild the carb, do a full tune up, replace vacuum lines, clean the egr and passages. Guaranteed to pass emissions with flying colors

bad news... it appears that when i seafoamed it, i broke loose all the crap holding together the headgasket, i have your typical signs of a bad HG.. so it dead for now. it doesnt look too hard (relativly) to replace the head gasket, but that will have to wait for a different day. i will wash it tomorrow and try to take some pics.

sounds like you may have dumped a little too much in there and blown out the fire rings. piece of cake to replace the gasket on a carbed truck, i can do it in a day.
