5 spd tranny identification

Hi all...I missed my 82 longbed so much after selling it a year ago that I went out and bought an 80 longbed last week. It is a 20R with 137k but somewhere along it's life, it has been converted to a 5spd. How do I go about identifying what year the tranny is?

Also...if anyone can steer me to some parts, I'm looking for a dash (brown or tan) and an AC pump for the truck.

Thanks!

It's funny but I am in the exact same situation right now. I have a 1979 P/U that's supposed to have the 4 speed L43 but there is a 5 speed in there, but who knows from which era. I too would love to know the answer to this one.

My friend has a 77 longbed with a 20R 5 speed in it. I hadn't known that you could get either an auto or a manual, so next time I see him, I will ask what tranny it is in it, and let you know (I will probably talk to him tomorrow).

if it's got an iron case and integral bellhousing, it's either an L50 or L52 from an '81-83 truck. if the case is aluminum with a removeable bellhousing, it's a later tranny, most likely G52 or W56

My case is a cast iron type, any quick way to tell if it's a 50 or 52? I've heard that the L52 is the better of the two but who knows, I'm just glad that I've even got a 5 speed, even if my shift knob only has 4 on it!

It looks like the bell-housing and tranny are one piece. Must be a L50 or L52. Thanks!

the only way to determine if it's an L50 or L52 is to look at the input bearing number, so you might be out of luck if its installed.

There isn't a motor on it yet, but there is a transfer case on it and it's under my truck I've had my motor swap in stalled by so called friends that never showed up to help me take the 20R out of my other truck.

Heh ...if you want to keep your truck stock I will trade you my L45 4 speed for your L50 or L52 5 speed ....
