i was speaking with some guys at work and the said that i could convert my carb powered 22r to a fuel injected system fairly easy. does anyone have any links to conversion kits?

 

A lot of people get the EFI parts (intake, TB, ECM, MAF, wiring, etc) from a 22RE at a scrap yard, e-bay, or a BBS like this and put it on their 22R, but that only works on 85+ 22Rs. The 85+ head and block are different from the earlier 22Rs.

LCE sells a kit that is based on an OEM EFI intake and TB that you supply. So again, it's only for 85+ 22Rs. It's mostly an electronic EFI management system that replaces the stock Toyota ECM. You should be able to get everything you need for a conversion from the sources above for half of what LCE wants for their partial kit.

If some one sells a kit for the pre-85 22Rs, I'm interested too.

 

the late model 22RE parts will work on an '83-up 22R, but you'll need to figure out how to mount a knock sensor, as there is no tapped hole for one on pre-85 22Rs. the intake manifold will bolt right up, though.

however, '81-82 22R heads aren't set up for the EFI intake, they don't have the dual bolt patterns. you can swap an '83-84 head on, though.

 

H'mm, if that's true, that opens up a lot of possibilities.

 

83 and 84 EFI setups didn't use a knock sensor. Probably would be best to get an 84. I recently saw someone parting out an 84 Celica EFI setup on ebay.

$499 starting bid, $399 S&H, for an engine w/199K mi. No thanks, I'd want to see and hear it run first. And w/that mileage it should be overhauled first before dropping it in (more $).
And the early Celica EFI wasn't too sophisticated.

 

I have 3 older ECU's for the Manual Tranny, that are the older Analog ECU's, they came out of Celicas or 2wd Pickup, they don't utilize a knock sensor.

My recommendation for going EFI on an older 22R, is to get a setup from a Celica (at least the ECU, and intake)

I've just about got everything I need to go EFI on my 20/22R Hybrid. I'm tempted to ditch the stock ECU and go with a megasquirt setup, Can't wait to get it done but I'm sure it'll be awhile yet, I have other priorities right now.

 

I did a TBI type conversion on my early 22R motor. Similar to the holley system used on Jeeps and early V8s. The system to control it will also control stock EFI hardware if you can get that to bolt up to a later head. www.msefi.com

I just bought a 85 22re toyota pickup. Thing is, the guy before me took off the fuel injection and put a carb on it...(i don't know why) I want to go back to fuel injection. Anybody have any ideas and the cheapest/best way to do it?

Uhh...Go buy the EFI stuff from a junkyard or someone parting out a 22re.....

ok so im buying everything from the airbox to the tank and all in between for an EFI swap for $150.

Since my motor is an 87 22R the Manifold should bolt right up and should have a tap for a knock sensor?

Also what needs to be tapped into the body harness?

 

So the say you had a 84 engine on a 1980 body and wanted to convert from a 20r carb setup to a fuel injected manifold. The 22re from a 1985 manifold will bolt right up? has anyone done this yet pretty sure I could find a fuel injecting manifold cheap at a junkyard just knowing if this would work.

So using an 84 or older block mean that I would have to drill and tap for a knock sensor correct? Is there anyway to bypass the knock sensor?

I have an 87 4runner with a 80-83 22r that some one swapped in. It has no knock sensor boss. Dual row timing chain. And a water leak near the thermostat where there is a stud/bolt missing. Assuming they didnt tap thread's for that hole...
