Hey guys, I just bought an '83 PU with what I think is a bad Carb. I know that they are known for being crappy then. Here is the deal. I can start the truck fine....it idles fine...runs fast when cold, then slows after warming up. But...if you try to give it gas...to drive it....it chokes down and turns off. If you pump that gas, and then floor it...it will drive...but really rough. I think I might just replace the carb...Sound like a good idea? (I know in a fantasy world, I would go propane, or engine swap for a 22RE...but I am not made of money) Any help would be great!

 

Welcome to the new old truck world. The way I see it if you buy a new one at least you can check that off your list of faulty crap. My 83 sat around for god knows how long before i got it yet the guy assured us the carb was "new." But I have that chokes down thing too. Im just waiting for an extra 400 bucks to land in my lap.

 

Pull the air filter.. Sure the choke is opening up once it get warms?
Carbs aren't magic.. They're mechanical and can be diagnosed and repaired...

 

I had a similar issue. You should also check for any intake leaks. For grins...start the truck, let it idle. Hold your hand over the intake to the air cleaner and pull the throttle cable. If it runs, the carb could be sucking air. I traced mine to an intake mainfold gasket.

Another big problem is just general air leakage around the throttle arm. I have an old 20R carb that I "semi" rebuilt, mainly because the previous owners had put it together wrong after the last rebuild and I couldn't get the bottom 3rd off. If you've got time, take it apart and attempt the rebuild, but you just my find yourself with the same problems. Needless to say I'm trying to get a new carb for my truck as well

I don't know if I would say the Aisin carbs are crappy. Mine runs pretty good and I know of several others who say fine things about them. I'm not sure if I'm reading your post correctly or not, but I remember when I first got my truck I would start it up and it would go to fast idle speed, I would let it run for a few minutes then I would start driving and the truck would act like something was holding it back like it had no power. Once the engine fully warmed this wasn't a problem. I gave the truck a tune up, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and adjusted the valves and DID NOT touch the carb and that problem disappeared completely.

 

I am facing similar issues with a 1982 Cal carbed 22-r. I am just starting into it, and wonder if I can junk all the Cal emissions stuff to eliminate possible contributing factors?
The question is will a Cal carb run w/out all the cal emissions vacuum, etc?
Next question- if I replace it with a non Cal carb, will I fail visual on emissions inspection (I am in Washoe county, NV, and soon Snohomish, WA, not CA)
Anyone know from experience (not just a guess)?

Any input is greatly appreciated
