Pardon my ignorance here !! Have an 80 SR5 2WD with a 20 R. The unit has a "clutch fan" from the factory.

I had this guy look'n @ my truck just gooing all over it. Said that he rarely see's this style of Yota around. Popped the hood for him so he could look @ the 20 R. First thing out of his mouth was......"why are you run'n a clutch fan on that ?? I would pull that thing and put an electric fan on that baby !! "

He told me that would be a better set up. I always thought that my little truck ran on the warm side (according to my temp gauge) and on hot days (above 90) the temp gauge runs just shy of the first line of 'H'.

Would this be a better set up ??

If so, where would I get this set up ??

 

well, first thing I'd do if it's running hot would be to flush my cooling system. Make sure you have enough antifreeze/water in there and the ratio should be right for your region/weather patterns/how cold or hot it gets where you live. And make sure your thermostat is working properly. They aren't that expensive so it's cheap insurance to just get a new one IMO.

 

Yeah, plenty of people run electric fans, but the stock fan is just fine. I run one and have no overheating issues. Like slisdexia said, if you're running warm, check out your cooling system. The fan clutch will likely make noise when it's going.

Could always be that your gauge is just off, too, but it's best to rule out the easy things already mentioned to make sure the cooland system is working properly.

Tons of people will same the same thing about all sorts of different stuff..."why are you running a stock carb? get a weber in that baby" "why don't you have a header on there?" etc. There's a use for all that aftermarket stuff and you can spend all kinds of money if you want, but the stock stuff is fine.

I have not figured it out yet !!

I power washed the radiator out a few weeks ago and all seemed fine. The other day I was run'n late so I kicked the yota up a notch and ran her about 70-75 all the way home. I usually do not run it that hard, 60-65 usually !!

I ran it that hard for about 20 miles. The closer I got to home, the needle was on its way up. By the time I got home the needle was just touching the start of the red. It usually (needle) runs about a 1/4 " from the red all the time when it is normal.

When I got home I let the motor run at idle in the drive way while looking at things. This went on for about 10-15 minutes. I got in to shut it off and noticed that the temp gauge was back to NORMAL !! It went back just sitting there idling !!

Is this a water pump problem, not being able to keep up ??? A head gasket ??? Clutch fan ??? Radiator ??

Still trying to figure it out !!!

Any help ??

 

so did you flush the radiator/cooling system like suggested? might have slight blockage..I might be misunderstanding how you powerwashed but power washing the outside won't do squat for the inside.
did you swap the thermostat as suggested?
is your coolant still green looking? level ok?

grill isn't blocked by some big lights or anything?

probably just time to replace the waterpump, hoses etc...
i know with a 4 speed my truck ran a little warmer....too high of rpms..need to get my 5 speed back in

 

Were you running the heater? Believe it or not running the heater will make the engine a little hotter on my 22re don't know about the 20r. You can fix it by installing a duel stage thermostat or by drilling a hole in a stock thermostat. My engine runs cool enough so I haven't had to changed anything. Tuning can also affect temperature.

The first thing i would do is pull the radiator and take it to a shop and have it cleaned on the inside, if its the original radiator then just replace it and upgrade to a two or three core radiator for better cooling. Also replace the thermostat.

 

is it the stock/original rad ?

I would just replace the rad .. turbo 4 cores are cheep and fit as stock ..
we sell em all day long !! much more then you will need but why not ?

Seems like the alt output would be about maxed with the pull of an e fan. My 2nd gen alt didn't like it and it was rated 20 amp over the 1st gen alts. Bet you will have to upgrade charging system.

 

I run a 2spd Ford Taurus fan on my 4x4 22r and on the low speed setting it cools so much that my engine almost never gets to 190deg. they are an easy swap and are easy to wire in.

 

Hey slacker what would a turbo rad cost btw?? just curious... think my rad is on its last leg here
