so true... Snapped siezed torsion bar adjuster bolt yesterday whilst in the middle of ball joints....only one broke on me though...funny.

Anywho, this writeup is killer, I'm sponging up info right now to make an educated decision and this helps immensely

I can't decide between a detroit, or an Aussie lunchbox for my DD that sees rough driveways and some off road stuff. Which would be better technically speaking. .. And give me a reason, don't just say that one is better please.

Well I did it, pulled the trigger on a rear aussie when I referred to 5.29's. Here in CO we see plenty of every imaginable slippery road, I will post performance review when driven enough to have good experience with bad conditions

So, an Aussie locker with an auto transmission is a tire eater?

I have Aussie lockers front and rear in my 84 4Runner and they are fantastic offroad. I can't speak much to the install since they were on the truck when I bought it. Also, I'm running 33" 10.50's w/ 4:88's and a 5sp manual.

The lockers tick a bit when pulling into parking spaces or when going around tight turns. They do chirp sometimes on turns, but this seems to be only under load. If I push in the clutch they glide around the turns. My lockers also make noise when the truck is in gear but not under load like when going downhill. Not sure if this is normal with age as I'm not sure how many miles they have on them, and of course they offer the occasional pop like others have mentioned, but they work great despite any noise.

I drove the truck from Baltimore to Rausch Creek about a month and a half ago, wheeled all weekend and drove home. I also drive the truck a couple times a week to work, running errands, or just a pleasure cruise, so it isn't a daily driver but does see a bit of mileage.

I know this is an older thread, just wanted to mention that i run a "Lokka" Aussie Locker in the rear($238 free ship). I hesitated to put one up front because of hard steering with my aged stock push-pull steering, even with power steering, and my friends said don't do it, for that reason. Now that i have the full HySteer, with a '94 steering box, it steers effortlessly, so i will try a locker up front. Should be in and done in a couple weeks. Will post a thread to show if it's got any detriments. Thanks, Matt16 for a great writeup!

I've been running the Aussie for just over a year now. I had it installed along with a full OME suspension upgrade.

It took some getting used to but I never felt it was dangerous in any way, even on wet roads. I do get wheel chirp when turning hard from a stop and always get ratcheting sounds when taking turns particularly in parking lots.

It performs quite well in the sand, mud, wet grass, and gravel by putting both wheels to work.

Overall, I am very happy with this locker as it has not forced me to change my driving habits all that much. By comparison there was a much larger adjustment needed to learn how to drive with my 32s.

I highly recommend this product for anyone who would like an inexpensive and road friendly locker for their daily driver.
