Heading to school in Colorado in less than 2 weeks...whats the best way to spend 1,000 bucks on a nearly stock 84 4x4 pickup?

and $1000 for at school doesn't count hahaha

ISR mod, exhaust, Ignition system upgrade, BJ spacers, (*edit*) shackles, or leaf springs, (*edit*) shocks and ceramic brakes..., although not necessarily in that order..., which will give you a little bit of both worlds (performance and offroadability) and get your foot in the front door to go further in either direction.

First off are you gonna be keeping the 84? I read your other post about gettinga n 89 runner....
anyway if you're gonna mod the 84, I would get:

A header, and a rear locker, that should put you back about 6-700, then you might as well get a front locker.....

so header and front and rear lockers....that's my vote

and set of 32x11.50s would use up your 1000. But budget to add a rear traction aid of some sort and you're all set.

For college in Colorado, you might want to get some snow tires and make sure your heater and radiator are up to snuff.

I would also invest in some recovery gear, ie straps, shackles, hilift, shovel, etc.

Then some CO trails books and a Chilton's manual ( since you won't be able to afford a shop to work on your truck for the next 4 years).

Lastly I would invest in some lockable storage boxes and perhaps an alarm system to keep whatever you spend your grand on from being stolen.

PS - a valuable piece of advice re college. Don't sign up for any 8am classes or classes that meet on Fridays after 1pm. You'll soon figure out why... Good luck dood!

I second the lift, pick up some used 33s for around 400 then spend the remaining couple hundred on a repair manual, recovery gear and even an ebay header

Would be interesting to see how ball joint spacers and coil springs/spacers would improve an '84....

84 4x4... is that a 22re or a 22r? the best power cheap mod i did was the giant air cleaner mod... less than $10 ... you need a m6x1 threaded rod, a wingnut and a locknut.... will also need to extent the breather hose to the top or cap it off on the cover and install a lce or similar breather to it...

get any type of mud terrain, and buy a rear locker....if it's and 84 lift is a minor issue...33's should fit stock w/ slight rubbing.

What college are you going to be going to. I am in Westminster, and I know there are quite a few other guys on here and we cover the entire Denver/Metro area and some other major cities. What ever you get, get some good all season tires, as Swampers suck on icy roads.

Also, let us know where you are going to school and I'm sure some of us would volunteer our garages and our help for any mods that you need help with.

Get a rear locker,some mud tires, and a CB radio for the love of god! The CB is probably the best and most used item I bought for my truck.
