Exclamation 96 T100 no start in 1 out of 20 attempts

96 T100, manual trans: NO START in 1 out of 20 attempts: new battery: full power to gauges- only 1 click per turn of key- engine turns almost, but cuts out abruptly.
Easier to remove and check the clutch safety switch ? Or starter ? Solenoid ?
Mike..

Sounds like starter contacts are starting to go. Dealing with the same issue right now. As they get worse, the clicking will get more frequent (1 in 10, then 1 in 5) and eventually get to the point where it won't start. Contacts are cheaper than a starter, and not that difficult to replace. Only problem is you have to pull the starter first in order to identify which contacts you have, whether you have a cold weather package starter or not (apparently they can't tell you which one is which when you call the dealer, or at least mine can't...)

Sounds to me like the solenoid is going out. Could be the clutch switch too but I would lean towards the stater.

The contacts are in the solenoid portion of the starter itself. Their the replaceable portion.

Thanks everyone ! ...is it possible to test the starter without yanking it ? (The guys at the Autozone say they can test it)... I'm trying to conserve energy...but i am curious to see if I can manage to replace the contacts and reassemble the solenoid/starter...

While it might be able to do some basic tests with the starter still installed in the engine...yer still gonna need to pull it to fix it. It's just better to pull it out and fix it.

Here's what it would involve in replacing the contacts...

I would just replace it even if it tests good. Unless you test it 20 times.

Thanks BamZipPow & TylerH...In my heart of hearts I knew that is what to do, and everybody would tell me so. If I have to endure one more no start moment, out comes Mr. Starter...
Thanks much.
