hey guys fumblin around craigslist yesterday and found this 7mgte motor for sale the guy says he wants $300. for it and has about 170k on needs a head gasket but hey worth fixen for that cheap. i want to do this swap but am unemployed right now so yea, hopefully can put this motor too good use !

A motor that's been sitting outside is going to be in rough shape. Chances are, the cylinder walls are rusted, and he'd be lucky if it's not seized. For a full rebuild, maybe it would be worth it, especially if it's a '90-'92 block, but otherwise, his price is way high.

I'd give him $50, maybe.

No way dude. I've bought GTE's in much better shape for that price...

Besides-
1) Anytime there's a BHG, you run the risk of coolant mixing with oil, which reduces it's lubricity, thus increasing the chances of rod knock. To properly fix rodknock, you've got to pull the crank, but some people skip that and just slap new bearings in. Not a proper fix. Why waste all that time with a motor that you might replace the HG on, only to fire it up and discover it's got rodknock. That is, of course, assuming it's not seized.

2) It's been sitting outside for an undisclosed amount of time. When water gets in the spark plug valley between the cam covers, it WILL seep past the plugs and into the cylinders, thus rusting the rings to the cylinders.

3) 7MGTE's in better shape sell for that much, often times in running condition, with a wiring harness and ECU. Built (forged internals, metal headgasket, ARP studs etc...) 7M longblocks sell for around $1000 if you look in the right places.

4) If the turbo hasn't been properly covered, you can consider that it needs a rebuild after getting crap in it for who knows how long.

Again, for $300, you can find something in running condition.

I picked up a bare 7mgte block, fully machined and ready for a MHG, for free. I got N/A pistons (higher static CR, better for a pickup) for free from my old motor, same with the rods. But generally they sell for about $50. Bearings are cheap. I picked up a crank for $30, already turned and ready to drop in. I've got a spare head laying around that I'll have machined and put that on.

I know 7M's, and that's not a good deal. Sorry dude.

I have an 87 supra turbo and would like to replace the engine and I figured a place like this, someone might have run across something that better than I have.

Currently I have my car on Craigslist but I will not let it go for scrap and if there is no decent offer made I am thinking about an engine swap if I can find one at a decent price so I can keep driving it.

As of right now the best price I could find was $1200 and I think that's quite high for an 87 so if anyone knows where I can find a better price (preferably with engine details to know its true condition before purchase) please let me know.
