Brake up grade for 79 pickup-finding parts for 79-80
I have a 79 pickup and was thinking about getting bigger rotors and calipers for the front. I was wondering if anyone has done this and if anyone knows about the set up at wabfab and if it easy to install and works good?? I've heard that the calipers dont fit with most wheels... or if anyone knows of some better rotors and pads that have worked good for you? thanks - Allyn

It's true, some wheels may not fit. I took the Pro Comp Rock Crawler steelies that were on my 4Runner and put them on there, simply cause I wanted to run the KM2's on my '83. Ended up having to use 1.5" wheel spacers for the 4.5" backspaced wheels to clear, though I could've used a touch smaller wheel spacer and cleared, probably. It is pretty dang easy to install, although some people are then unhappy about having more pedal travel with the larger calipers and the stock master cylinder. My master is leaking internally, so I'm upgrading to the 1" master from Marlincrawler since it's recommended anyway. As it is, it still stops really well, even though I pretty much only have front brakes unless I stomp on it.

you need the vented rotors off a 81-87 FJ-60, the calipers off an 86 or newer pickup/runner, and the master cyclinder from an 88 or newer v6 pickup. a dismantler might be your best bet.

I've never heard of that, most of the kits and brackets out there to convert the rear to discs are for GM calipers and rotors. Search, you might find something.

OR, machine down the outer WMS so a Tacoma rotor can fit over it, and you might get a vented, floating rotor...
The math indicates that only for the 79-80 hubs THIS WILL WORK...
I just can't do it b/c, hello? Where can one find those hubs?

So i bought 81+ LC vented rotors and i just read on pirate FAQ section that i need 79-80 LC vented rotors for my 79 pickup the 81+LC rotors are for the 81+ pickups. I know that in the 79 and 80 pickups the LC rotors just bolt on to the hub assembly with six bolts but in the 81+ pickups you need to press out the wheel studs bolt on the new rotor with two bolts and then press the wheel studs back through the rotor and the hub. My ? is whats the difference between the 79-80 LC rotors and the 81+ rotors and can i just use the ones i have with the two extra bolt holes or do i need to buy the 79-80 rotors?

Break upgrade.. HELP!
So i have been doing the big brake upgrade on my 79 pickup and have found that the 79 and 80 pickups need the 76-80 FJ40 front rotors even though most of the things ive read on here and other places say that the 81+ rotors work... so ive been running around to part stores and they have been ordering the 81+ rotors and cant seem to get me what i need. I want to know if anyone with at 79 or 80 pickup has done this swap and what rotors they used and a part number if possible. thanks ahead of time.

Totally unrelated but how long ago did you get your truck? Pretty sure I remember seeing it on craigslist about a year ago. Really nice looking.
If you ever decide to get rid of the topper, you just let me know. I'm always looking for a reason to go to Bozeman, and that topper looks really nice.

So i dont know if anyone else is looking for these rotors and having trouble but i found this site with some of the 76-80 rotors OEM, Japanese, and aftermarket all pretty expensive but im pretty sure they are the rotors for the 79 and 80 pickup upgrade.

[quote=adamsbro1;51454995]Ok so if I get 81 fj rotors and calipers they will jolt right up to my 82????[/q
If you have an 81+ pickup you need 81+ rotors and i got 86+ toyota 4x4 V6 IFS calipers... the V6 are the good ones with the 4 big pistons. On your truck you need to press out the wheel studs and then press them back through your new rotors and hubs where as the 79 and 80 pickups just bolt on. here is a good write up i found.
