1985 toyota 4x4 help, be easy on the newbie!

I got my first truck . I have a few questions for you guys. first ill describe the truck. Its an 85 4x4 std cab toyota, Stock 22r 5speed, stock front and rearend, stock transfer case,5.29 gears, 35x14.5 thornbirds, rancho shocks and 2 steering dampners. I was told it had a 7" sus. lift and 3" body lift. I bought the truck to take mudding and thru some trails/woods and hills. Im in michigan so im sure i wont be doing any rock climbing, though i would love to try it!

1st question-how can i get it to turn? lol

2nd question- would longer travel suspension help or hurt?

3rd-question- softer or stiffer leave springs? 63" chevys?

4th question- whats the differnce in raisin the rear with blocks or springs?

5th question- should i put 4runner rearend in it with spacers in front?

6th question- could u please be nice to the newbie???

1-what do you mean get it to turn? more detail would be good.
2-longer travel will ALWAYS help but the way thats set up you should have plenty unless its got blocks in which case springs would be very beneficial
3-depends on what you want, if your gonna tow at all stiffer would be good. stiffer doesnt always mean less travel the 63" chevys for instance are stiff but flex very well (or so ive heard) i hear thats a great setup and if you have blocks in the rear id definitely recomend it
4-check this thread for disadvantages of blockshttps://www.yotatech.com/forums/f123...ld-fun-150206/
as for a spring lift it will give you better flex, less axle wrap, good looks, and are much stronger
5-theres lots of kinds of 4runner rear ends. i assume your thinking about the 3rd gen with coil overs which would flex better and look badass but imo (in my opinion) its not worth all the work unless your into hardcore crawlin id just stick with a good set of springs like marlin crawlers from marlincrawer.com
hope this helps

for the steering part do you still have the stock steering or has it got hysteer? if you dont know what this is step away from the truck lol jk
just take some close up pics of the front and rear axles and we can show you from there. i would reccomend that you lose the blocks and get the chevy springs. since you arnt doing any rock clawling then you dont need a wider stance it would help with that much lift if you are daily driving it just for safety, but if your just trail riding it or mudding then it doesnt matter.

That thing is too tall for crawling, but your main intention is mud than I guess it will fit your needs. Look into doing 63" rears with a small lift block and rancho 44044's in the front. You can get a full power steering setup for about $150 to $200 and hy-steer for $300. 35" tires are kind of hard to pull off on stock gearing. that would require 5.29s

If your just muddin' and trail riding. I would leave the suspension the way it is and go to hysteer with power steering. Your life will be much simpler and you won't break your steering while your wheeling. The stock push-pull is kind of weak and is known to have issues with that large of tires. I'm looking to convert my 85 to crossover/hysteer as one of the next mods.

BTW That truck is HUGE!!!!!! lol Personally, I wouldn't build anything that tall. But it should be good for mud! But I wouldn't consider trail that is off camber!

Good Luck with it!! Keep us posted

If you go hysteer, you shouldn't need the hydro-assist. And you shouldn't have any issue adding it later if you so choose. I would assume go with the hysteer 1st then the hydro if you need.

The best advise I've been given was build it one step at a time. That way you can feel all the mods and see the differences they make. Then you know more about it and can appreciate them more. Plus, you have a better idea what broke if something goes wrong.

I really don't mean to be offensive. But I'm having a heck of a time understanding what you are trying to say.
Are you saying you have an '85 4x4 with 33x12.50's that rub? And you're asking what is better, a body lift or a suspension lift?

Is your truck lifted some already? If so, how much?

You said your mudding. I would think that a suspension lift would be better. Because then you lift the body and the frame up, allowing you to traverse deeper mud without dragging your frame in it. Dragging the frame in mud creates a heck of suction and adds A TON of Drag! Or so I have been told. I do my best to stay out of Mud. It is super hard on the truck!

That's amazing that you have 33's under a stock truck! Mine rubbed when I was running 31x10.50's at stock height. lol ! Mine rubs my 33's if I touch a bump while turned. And I'm up 4.5" or so. Go Figure.
I need to relocate my axle forward an inch or more. I'll probably do this when I flip my U-bolts and go to dual case. Since I will be extending my drivelines at that point anyway.

Do you have any pics? I bet it looks pretty Sweet with those huge tires stuffed in the wheel wells.
