Thumbs down K&N Filter

Well, as usual you guys were absolutely right... I opened up my airbox to check on my K&N and it was an oily gunky mess inside. Fortunately the sludge hadn't made it through to the filtered side yet but I'm not taking any chances. I guess the high temps here in Dallas take a toll on the filter but I'm tossing it anyway before any damage is done to my MAF sensor. I hope it isn't too late. AMSOIL here I come!

Glad you caught it in time.
I tossed my K&N a few years or less ago.

I hope something becomes of the Amsoil campaign here to get them made from Amsoil.

I'm sure Mike will keep us in the loop.

I am considering changing my K&N to the Amsoil. I just keep hearing tooooo many good things about the Amsoil air filter. I havn't paid too much attention to them until recently (I do have a reasonably new K&N after all). They do make one for the 3.4l right?

speaking of... do they even make an Amsoil for the 3.0? i was at Gadget's web site last week and emailed him for info about ordering one and never got a reply. So how do I order one? The Amsoil website confuses me. It's just part numbers and I don't know which is which.

Churnd, see this post.

We are trying to get Amsoil to make one for the 3.0.

Tomus, most of the 3.4 owners here are running the Amsoil air filter.
Look in our Tech section also on how to do the deck plate mod to your air box.

That and the Amsoil filter will give your more horse power.

BATTLEZ (JAOS) Air filter

Has anyone had any experience with a BATTLEZ (JAOS) air filter??? It costs big bucks- $125 is it an effective replacement for the K&N since AMSOIL is still in the works? It supposedly doesn't use an oil in the filter element so that is a big plus in my opinion.

I love my Amsoil™ and it does it's job well.

If you get it, be sure to do the deckplate mod to your airbox afterwards!

Don't over-oil it and you won't have that problem! I've been running a K&N in my 2000 for 2+ years now, no problems. K&N in our 1990 4-Runner for 6+ years now, no problems. K&N in my brother's Z-71 for 4+ years now, no problems. K&N in my dad's
Z-71 for 3+ years now, no problems. K&N in my mom's Yukon for almost a year now, no problems. See a trend here? Now, time to go clean my MAF and intake. :~)

I've been running a K&N Filter in my truck for over a year now (since I bought it) when I first got it I checked the air filter and it was really dirty and looked like it was in bad shape. So I went out and bought a K&N because my friend suggested it to me because that's what he's used in both his trucks (both Toyotas). So I was using that with absolutely no problems, and then I decided to get the K&N FIPK Kit about 4 months after I bought the truck (91 4Runner) and I've been using that ever since, I clean it every other oil change (unless I've been through a lot of dust) And in the whole time i've been using a K&N Airfilter (stock size, and then the big cone one for the FIPK) and I've never had any problems with them. Unless Amsoil makes a filter that will fit onto my FIPK Kit then I probably won't be switching.

Well, I didn't over-oil it because it went in stock right out of the box... I did run a K&N previously in my 5.9L Dodge Ram with no problems but I don't want to take any chances with my Toy. I wish 2nd gens could do the deck-plate mod. Maybe a modified under the hood snorkle perhaps? Let me think on it and see what I can come up with... The new 2003 Honda Pilot has an interesting set-up for it's intake, maybe I can copy that idea somehow as long as I can get a source for cool air.
Anyone using BATTLEZ out there???

Internal Snorkel

Ahhh, so you wanna see a hidden snorkel 'eh?

Allen Jenson pioneered this, and it has become known as the AJ snorkel around the Internet community.

Here are a few URLs.

Lee did one also on his rig, but he has no write-up.

He's pretty meticulous when it comes to doing things as he has rebuilt his rig after it was totaled, and also has worked in a body shop.

Might try getting a hold of him here from the membership list and see how he did his.

Here is how I did mine a few years back.

Sorry, but if I hadn't replied to your email I never will. I had near 200 emails I needed to respond to when my hard drive crashed. Those are long gone for ever...

I am just now getting the PC back up and running. I figured it was a good time to move upto Windows XP and of course half my stuff does not work anymore.

No, AMSOIL does not make a foam filter for the 3.0. They do sell a Hastings paper one, but unless it is cheaper then the stock one I could not say there was any advantages to it.

He he he, beleive it or not, I really do want a Safari snorkel down the road some day.

Here is a pic someone photoshopped of my rig (before it was ARB'd) and they put a snorkel on it.

The picture of the snork was actually taken from John's Land Cruiser.

Sweet!!!
I'ld love to put that snorkle on my rig, much better than a hidden/under the fender job. If you're gonna snorkle go all the way or don't go at all.

those snorkel designs draw air in from the back part of the engine compartment... where air is sparse and hot. both of those things will make you lose considerable power. i think it would be more worth it to buy the external one from ARB.
