water pump whine?

Hey guys,
Recently I had oil leak into my alternator which prevented it from charging the battery. I took it to my friends shop and he cleaned it out. AFter i got it back i could hear a faint whining sound when ever i gassed it. Just yesterday, the sound got really loud and just when i noticed it, my by-pass hose blew. Today I replaced it but the whining is just as loud. I'm afraid i'm going to screw something else out if i don't find out what it is. It sounds like i have a supercharger bolted on or something. Could it be my water pump giving out?

Disconnect the alternator, PS pump, and ac compressor, if U still got whine it could be a water pump, Idler pulley, cam bearing etc....

You have a bad water pump, i had the same problem in my 86 4Runner, replaced the water pump and the noise was gone.

Yea, im pretty confident in that, when it happened to my 4Runner i first thought it was the power steering pump, so i swapped it out with a spare one that i had, and the noise was still there when i started it up, needless to say i was more than a little pissed off that i swapped the power steering pump for nothing. I changed the water the next day and that solved the problem. The water pump wasn`t wasn`t leaking, i think the bearing just went bad.

Did it quiet down as the day went by? I got home tonight and the sound was completely gone, but it should be back in the morning.

Did you disconnect all the accessories (A/C, PS, Alt.)? This will still help determine the problem.

Yea, it would quiet down after a few minutes of running, but damn it was loud
and just a matter of time before the bearing froze up or it started leaking, so i just replaced it and the noise is gone. So you could probably go on your trip and not have any problems other than the loud noise, but you really do need to change it as soon as you can.

Yep, I had a crankshaft bolt loosen (previous owner) and blow through the woodruf key and grind away at the harmonic balancer. Been replacing and tracking down problems it has caused. Have a similar sounding whine.

Put on belts one by one and listened for the whine.
A/C: a little whine
Power steering: nothing
Water pump & alternator: major whine

Used a long screwdriver as a stethoscope (put it to an accessory and to my ear to hear the vibrations [sound] traveling through the screwdriver) and have whining vibrations from the tensioner pulley on the A/C belt and the water pump.

Will be replacing those today.
....just waiting for the persistent rain of western washington to go away...
