So, I went to ye olde Pick 'n Save the other day and thought I had struck gold: I found a functioning 22RE AFM out of a fellow '93 like mine, but I also found a functioning AFM out of an '87 Cressida with a 5MGE (this is the only 'ssida I've ever seen in the place, by the way).

I came home, threw the 'ssida AFM on and the truck started, then the CEL came on and the truck wouldn't rev past 3K, though it did seem throatier up to the 3K. So, I decided to take the internals out of the RE AFM and throw them in the other one, and wouldn't you know it, I found this:



...the RE internals don't fit. The board is too narrow and the screw holes need to be widened to attach it.

Anyone else had this problem? What can I do?

The only AFM I am aware of being interchangeable is the 82 Supra and it has the larger bore. You will probably have to get one off of a 22re as far as I know. Is there something about a Cressida that interchanges that you havent mentioned?

I knew going in that it wasn't a direct plug-and-play, that's why I got the spare 22RE AFM so I could move the internals over. Others have written on here that it's possible. Check out this link:

Did you pull the entire AFM from the wrecked 22RE or just the internals? Couldn't you just have swapped the entire thing over?

Edit: I think I misunderstood. You're trying to move the internals from the wrecked 22RE AFM into the Cressida AFM?

Thanks for the link. To bad he didn't mention the exact year of AFM he used. Toyota likes to always change something and I wonder if that is the issue you are running into.

Yes, The AFM did not work when plugged straight in: it threw the CEL and the truck wouldn't rev past 3000 RPM. Thusly I decided to transplant the internals from the RE to the 'ssida AFM but it's about 1/4" too short to be correctly installed into the Cressida box.

I'm thinking that's what it is. I know the big blue oval is notorious for changing modules and parts mid-model year (some of them seem to change from day-to-day honestly), maybe Toyota is doing the same thing. These early EFI systems are pretty bad and they were always tinkering with things to improve them. At least it only cost me $30 total
