38's fit under my '85 with no rubbing
Although yes, they are bald and I have only started to groove the rears...that probably makes the difference.

I have 265/75/16's on my '84 Runner. Those come out to a 32 X 11. They are the same size I run on my '04 d-Cab Taco.
My springs are saggy so there is NO way I could put 33" on there. But even if I did, I think I would want to go with tall and skinny. I know a few manufacturer's (such as Interco and BFG) make tall skinny tires. Like a 33X10.50, This will go a long way to alleviate rubbing. I know interco makes a 34 X 9.00 in a 16" size...you would have to lift to get a 34" in there, but tall and skinny is good.

those are tiny. i'd say on the 89 you could easily fit 33/10.5. and on the 84 i'd say the same but taking into consideration that it's 10 years older than mine and i thought i had sag......i'd say probably 32's

I really like the 33x10.50s mounted on factory 6" wide rims.

33x10.5's are pretty much the largest you'll want to go with no lift. considering i hate body lifts, i'm sticking with the 33x10.5's. once they're mounted and balanced, i'll decide what type of trimming (if any) i'll need to do. i'd rather trim my fenders and make it look good than bodylift.
i run 31x10.5's now, and they're fine. (mounted on AR wheels that came with the truck) no rubbing ever.
