89 4runner daily driver.

I have a double cardan rear driveshaft that is 43 inches long.
I have 56 inch rear springs (mazda).
I have 6 inch center to center shackles on the rig right now.

I have 6.15 degrees of pinion angle by the math and 7 measured on the truck.

My driveshaft angle is currently measured at 15 degrees.
My pinion angle is too low. The back of the truck is also too low by a few inches.
I'm thinking about REALLY LONG rear shackles.

15 degress on the shaft, -1 for pinion tilt under load = 14 degrees.
BUT, Since I rotate the pinion up, the driveshaft angle goes down. I think it is 11 inches from the center of the perches to the pinion flange, so I think I'll be down to about 14 degrees of DS angle, BUT since I'm going to be lifting the back at the same time and the front pivot is not in the same place as the front of the driveshaft...I'm guessing the DS angle will go back up. I'll need about 12-13 inches of shackle to do the job. Wow, that is a LONG lever!

What about a 12 inch long shackle out of 3/8s steel 2 inches wide? to start with? Just too long for a street truck? Anyone ever try it?

For me, the beauty of this idea is that I get more lift in the back to level the truck AND a chance to fix/improve my pinion angle at the same time.

 

i really wouldnt do that, go to www.sky-manufacturing.com and get their chevy 63" swap kit and get a pair of chevies (will cost you about $150 in all to do this) and do it right

 

Ive seen some guys run really long shackles but they are usually the desert runner guys with like gobs and gobs of rear travel

 

Longest I have made is 9" center to center and I have run 7" center-center. I think 12" is probably way too long, leverage on the shackle hanger will be really high and it'll probably be pretty unstable on the road. I would consider splitting the lift and pinion angle tilt between shackles and a tapered lift block:

Thanks for the input. I think I'll build 7 inch shackles first. That will get me to:
mathmatically 7.1 degrees (not much better than where I am today, but it will help.

Then cut a shimmed 1 inch lift block (probably tack it to the perch) Then extend the e-brake levers, then swap some leaves to make up any more height I need.

On second thought, I'll still be low and have to swap leaves anyway, so I think I'll just cut shims. (steel)

won't the fancy chevy swap kit still leave my with my pinion angle near 90? That isn't much more right than I am today.

 

Dude you don't really get 44mpg do you? That would be insane...the best I have managed in my truck '93 5 spd. w 22re (4x4) is 24 mpg.
