My vehicle is a 1992 4runner 3.0 V6 4x4 w/ a manual tranny. It has 187,800 miles on it and is making a noise that I believe is coming somewhere from the front axle. I took it to a mechanic when it started making the noise more frequently and they said it was the differential bearing. They fixed that with fixing IFS coponents and replacing the breaks. The noise never seemed to go away but it seemed to get better after they worked on it. Now its been a little longer then a month and it seems that it is getting in the same condition, however it only does the noise when the vehicle is cold and expecially when the weather is cold outside. The noise is a low grumbling noise that u can feel in the steering wheel and pedals coming from that area of the vehicle. If anyone had the same problem or know what it might be please leave me a message.

P.S. Also it seems not to do the noise in four wheel drive. if that has anything to do with the noise.

 

does it make the noise when things are cold? does it eventually go away after the front drive components warm up? it could be the bronze bushing in the knuckle wearing out. the good news is, there is a repair option for this. replacing the bronze bushing with needle bearings et al. seach for front end wheel bearing or similar and you should get lots of reading.

Definately sounds like the wheel bearing. My runner is doing the same thing at the moment. I've got to replace my bearings this weekend when I switch to manual hubs. Do a search there are many good threads about this on the board.

 

Yea, Mine is doing this right now. I'm going to do the wheel bearings and possably do a hub swap if I can get my hands on a set.

 

What Lee said is it. I have the exact same problem on mine - it is not the wheel bearings. It is called the spindle bearing or bushing. It took me years to find out. I called toyota USA and there is a service bullitin on it. It isn't a cheap fix - I just live with mine as it hasn't been doing any harm. The parts are about $400 and the labour is about the same.

I had that on my '90 and Toyota told me the same thing. It wouldn't hurt anything but the fix was a bit expensive. It really bothered me but I could usually get it to go away by shifting into and out of 4WD.

 

I just did my hubs a couple weeks ago. There are a couple sets of aisin's on ebay right now. Pretty good prices too.
