wheels size fitting?

i have a 96 SR5 with the stock 16" wheels. Is there any way that a 15x8 with a 3.75 backspacing aftermarket wheel fit on my 4runner?

no. unless you want to grind brakes, stick with a 16" wheel.

And even then, not all 16" wheels are the same: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/true-false-all-aftermarket-16-wheels-will-rub-calipers-3rd-gen-4runner-69835/

I tried Mickey Thompson Classic II's in 16x8 with 4-7/16" backspacing, and they did not clear the calipers on my '96. I have heard that folks with newer 3rd generation 4Runners do not have the same caliper issue. I ended up with similar looking Pro Comp Xtreme Alloys in 16x8 with 4" backspacing. Wheeler's Off-Road (www.wheelersoffroad.com) sells them, though I bought mine through a local shop.

If yours came with stock 15" wheels, then you should be fine. You can go from a 15" wheel to 16" w/ almost no problems but you can't go the other way around because of the bigger brakes on the stock runners with 16's.

No, he would not be able to fit your 15's if his came with 16" stockers.

Trial fit 'em and see. Only takes a minute.

It is not always true that if it came with 16" wheels then 15" won't fit. The bigger brakes did not come on all 16" equipped vehicles.

Try them and then you'll know.

I would try it and see how much they are off if they don't fit. I may grind a bit on a caliper but be careful not to take off too much material.
