I've always said the only thing I really missed about any of my other cars is the HIDs. I know some people have done some intricate conversions to the projector type HID systems. I was wondering if anyone had looked at the HID system from a Lexus IS300? It's looks like it would be a lot easier to fit that to a 4Runner than the projector types found on most cars. Even if you forego the auto-leveling feature on the IS, just taking the bulbs, and balasts. Anyone have any ideas on how feasibile this might be? My g/f just picked up an '05 IS300 so I am going to take a good look at the system.

I wonder if the reflector in the 3rd gen is adequate for true HID use, if it is, then really just the bulbs and ballasts are required.

 

if you are just gonna use the bulbs and ballasts....you might as well just get an hid kit from xenondepot or somewhere like that. they come with shields so they dont glare all over. thats what im doing at least. im looking into the 6000k kit from xenondepot for my 02 4runner

 

I've done exactly what you are wanting to do. I didnt retrofit projectors..too much work and it doesnt look good to me. Picked up a used IS300 HID kit(Denso) for around $220 and bout $40 for casper shield. Wiring was a piece of cake. Do a search on Lexus HID, better yet, here's the link

No high beams? I can't go w/o them here in TX.... too many lonely roads w/ lots of deer. I need to find a solution that will allow me to have high and low beams.

 

you can get Hella 500s? they will out perform ANY high beams

 

I know there is a gate type device in the projector type HIDs that controls the high/low beams. But on the reflector halogen looking HID systems what controls the high/low beam? I know the ballasts are ONLY for igniting the HID bulbs, so I don't know what actually differentiates between low and high.

 

without the casper shield would make them as highs! ahah


But yeah im running 6000k bulbs plug n play type no projectors and i like it alot.

 

do you have any pics of that? i saw the one in your picture album...just want to see more. how are the beam patterns? thats what im about to get for my 4runner...just wanted to see how they look.

 

Most OEM manufacturers use HIDs only for the low beams. HIDs do not reach full brightness right away, so halogens function better as a high beam. The "flash to pass" feature wouldn't be as effective with an HID high beam either.

 

Most OEM applications today have the projector type HID that has a "gate" inside the housing that allows more light out and a higher pattern when the brights are activated. I guess the halogen looking HID are low beam only, like the IS300 and Subaru STI. Too bad.. I guess I have to keep looking for a high/low beam setup w/ projectors. The search for some LX470, BMW 3 series, or Infiniti projector HIDs continues....
