a 340 h woes; number 4 solenoid
Hi everybody, I'm looking for a little insight on my tranny. I was told that a diagnostic test on my transmission pulled up a code 65 (no.4 solenoid) and that this was located in the connected transfer case. I was also told by the tranny guy whom has a great rep that it would cost upwards to 2550.00 to get my tranny in the ok zone again. My question is if I keep my o/d turned off, will it prolong the life of my tranny or would I still be in dire straits? I love my truck and eventually want to do something fancy with the tranny but dont have the money at this time. Any info. would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Whoah....run like hell. He's trying to rip you off. The number 4 solenoid is located just under the oil pan in your t-case, it's an easy fix.
Rent a trans jack, support the tranny, unbolt the crossmember from the t-case and remove the t-case oil pan, and you will see the wires going to the number 4 solenoid. I've got an FSM manual on my comptuer I can email you the pages for the repair.
I would actually go somewhere else and have them pull the codes to see whats REALLY wrong with your truck. What kind of problems are you having with the truck anyhow?

Could you e-mail me the pages for the solenoid repair from your FSM manual as well? I have an '86 4runner with an a340h tranny and am having what sounds to be the same problem. Here's my e-mail address: awfitch@juno.com
Thanks. Aaron

Back when i first got my 4runner, I was doing some freeway driving (65-75mph for about 40 miles) and i got an a/t oil temp light. I pulled over and shut down for a bit and everything was ok after that. Other symptoms may include slightly burnt tranny fluid and an occasional blinking o/d light (when in 4low). I think that most of all i'm paranoid from that one light. When I first bought this rig, it had some pretty burly tires on it (may like 33x14.50 on 12 in wide rims). I do reckon that this may have stressed out the tranny some but am not sure to what extent. Now I have 31x10.50's on 8 inch wide rims. I go pretty easy on the acceleration and keep the o/d button off. By the way thanks for the reply, i intend on getting a 2nd opinion now and I genuinely appreciate the feedback, it's making me feel much better about a rig that I don't think I can part with.

Ok, now to the #4 solenoid issue:
This would only afffect your ability to shift into 4WD LOW and can certainly be much cheaper than $2500......someone is trying to get a full rebuild out of you. If you really have a code 65, it can be fixed far cheaper than that.

thanks for that info bro, i'm starting to feel like a dummy but i'm happy that there are people with this kind of knowledge. I'll definitely get this thing flushed and look into swapping that solenoid.

ok, it's a few days later and i have flushed the cooling system and the transmission. I also got an oil change. Well so far, so good. Everything seems to be somewhat improved performance (and temp) wise. Had another issue though. While driving with the a/c on, i caught smoke from under the hood, then the a/c got real "humid" and was no longer working. What got smoked? Any ideas? I won't need the a/c much longer but it is Phoenix and I should probably get it working again. Help!!

thanks for the reply, i did, however, neglect to mention that i got a pretty good whiff of "burnt rubber" smell. sorry about that, i guess that might have been pretty crucial information. i guess i'm just flustered about it.

I haven't had it checked quite yet. i'll post as soon as i do, can i get this done @ autozone? As far as my a/c, I'll bet you're right. Is this an easy job or will i need to purchase a new one? These things seem kind of spendy, like 265 for a remanufactured one. wow. How much is a/c worth to me in phx. lol any how, i would like to thank everyone for their input, it's rare to have such a good support group anywhere thx again.
