My 88 4Runner doesn't stop very well so I checked the brakes over the weekend. The rear drums still have some material on the shoes but the drums are worn pretty good and I'm not sure they can be turned and stay within specs. The front rotors have some grooves as well. I'd rather upgrade both front and rear at the same time. The last thing I want to do is get cheap and buy some rotors that warp right away. Has anyone used any of the aftermarket vented, cross drilled, dimpled rotors and liked the braking with no problems? What brand did you go with? Is there any decent rear brake setup that works better than stock? Does anyone make a rear disc conversion?

 

whatever front rotor they put on mine was cheap and it exploded after some axle service this week......i want to do rear disc conversion, I have no idea about most brake stuff.

 

Get one of these, just toss it out when you REALLY want to stop...

If you have any lift on the truck, you may have affected the Load Sensing Proprotioning Valve (LSPV). It would "see" the lift as the same as lightening the load on the rear axle. It's response is to cut the braking force to the rear brakes. So, make sure the LSPV is adjusted properly, I find mine works best if the sensing arm is nearly at the top of travel at the LSPV.

I hear the Brembo rotors work well up front, never tried them myself, I have Wilwood brakes on my '85. In back, Sky Mfg. makes a rear disc kit, or Front Range Offroad Fab. has a disc + full floating conversion kit for the rear axle.

 

I too am interested in getting better braking on a 1st gen 4cyl 4runner. I was planning on trying out the slotted rotors. I have stainless lines to replace the rubber hose to install.

Are their any pads that might be better than another?
Any way to upgrade to different calipers (bolt on)?

Everything I find searching both the net and here are for other generations. Doesn't seem to be much for the first gen's.

 

i have power slot rotors and hawk pads on my 93 pickup works great i got the ones that where dimpled there where a little more money but looks cool

 

Anyone heard of these NTB ceramic pads from Japan? I'm wondering if the NTB stands for National Tire & Battery.
