Alright guys, im stressing out. I just got the brakes apart on my 93 4runner (2wd) but im running to some issues.

I just took the rotor /hub assembly off, and removed the 6 bolts behind the up (inside the brake rotors) expecting them to seperate. But they didnt, and i dont know when to go from here. Ive tried to pry them apart and everything, and its just not happening. The bearing and whatnot are still in there too.

What do i do from here to seperate these and attach the new rotor? Please help!! Thanks!!

 

Ugh i dont know what to do. I think i might just throw it all togeather and take it somewhere. Sucks though due to how far ive already come on it.

Like i said, im working on it RIGHT NOW, so if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

 

gotme on my 89 4wd you have to have the hubs pressed off the rotor, shouldn't be hard to find someone in your area with a press

 

i believe they will need to be pressed off. some parts stores can do it otherwise take it to a machine shop.

 

Hmm, Haynes says that there is only 5 bolts holding the 2wd hub to the rotor. They make no mention of it needing to be pressed off - all Haynes says to do is remove the bolts and replace the rotor on the hub assembly.

Sucks man - let me know how it goes for you...I am going to be doing the very same thing next weekend myself.

your going to go some where and have someone charge you over a 100 to do your brakes, all you have to do is take the hub & rotor to a machine shop or local parts store and they will do it for about 5. After time all the heating and cooling of the rotor they become stuck on there and need to be pressed off.

 

When I did mine they were stuck on good too. I bolted the hub into a wheel lying on the ground and then stood on the tire. Then got long pry bar and pried around the rotor. I think I used a piece of 2x4 on the tire to protect it. Took a little while but it got done, the second one was easier after I got practice.

 

Huh...thats a good idea. Im gona give that a shot. Thanks again for the help all, ill work on it today and report back! Hopefully i get somewhere as we need the car for work tomorrow.

 

That's what I had to do too. Just bolted back into my wheel to get leverage and off they came. Then I found out the place turning my rotors didn't want them off the hub.

 

Alright guys, i need more help. Do i even have the right rotors?

Ok, on the assembly that i pulled off it looks like the rotor has a cylinder type thing in the center of the rotor that slided onto or hold in the bearings and whatnot. On the rotor that i have...it doesnt. Here are some pics:

Yeah i know, i took those bolts out when trying to remove it. I just put them back in when i thought i was going to give up and put it all back togeather.

But do i have the right rotors?

 

Sigh...welp..thats that.

For my life...it woudlnt come apart. I attached it to the wheel (with inside hub/rotor bolts off of course) and tried to pry them apart. Not a budge. I even took a huge 7ft long steel pipe and used it for leverage/extension on the crowbar. And still nothing. I had someone come stand on the wheel while i go and push on the iron extension bar...nothing.

There was nothing i coudl do really, i tried several diff ways. So i put it all back togeather. I was going to at least try to change the pads since they were worn down real bad. I couldnt even do that! I pins that hold the pads in wouldnt slide through. I got one to move, but the other wouldnt move a mm. I sprayed pd blaster all over it, and used a hammer and something to hit it with (in this case a socket extention). I tired from both sides to get it going. But it wouldnt move at all. This is rediculous...

It might help if you would scrape all the crud off of the hub. The rotor opening has to slide over all that junk. You must have a lot more rust than I do because I had no problem getting my pins out to change the brake pads. Is there a lot of salt on the roads where you live?

 

What you need is a prybar and a large hammer. Hammer the prybar in between the rotor and the hub and it will split apart. PITA, but it works.

 

Man, invest in an air hammer. I used an air hammer and got the rotors separated in 2 minutes. I used the tapered pin bit and just slowly worked around the rotor until it came off. If I didn't own an air hammer I would use chisel and work it around. Clamp the rotor in a vise since you won't use it again anyway.

Don't forget to pick up some grease seals and repack your bearings while you're in there.

You might also try some heat on the rotor (not the hub). Heat may expand the rotor (making it easyer to slide off), as well as help break it free.

 

I guess you must have had a lot of rust and such on the hub - how did you end up getting the rotors off?

You are gonna hate to hear this but I just did the full job up front including pads,rotors and wheel bearings&races - my rotor unbolted and lifted right off the hub. The portion you asked about in your pics above is art of the hub and not the rotors - they do look like they are one and the same when they are bolted together though.
