Hey All-

We've been working with Richard Stubbs, the guru of Toyota sliders!

These are weld on only - I didn't do any measuring or design work for a bolt on type. After measuring and laying out some mounting locations, I sent Richard a basic print, he transformed them into hard steel in 3 days!

To keep the truck a little cleaner, the sliders are being filled w/ 1/8" floor plate. It will also add better traction when entering/exiting the truck.

To avoid warpage, I tacked the plates on w/ 1/2" welds, and moved from point to point around the plate. So far it's worked well. The sliders have bowed about 3/16" total over 86 inchs. I used the next to lowest setting on my Lincoln 175 Mig welder. The warpage could have been decreased by using a 75/25 Argon/CO2 mixture, but my MIG tanks serve double duty as my trail air source, so I use straight CO2 - it's much cheaper than mixed gas.

I'll cont. to update this as the painting and mounting progresses!

Very nice! Is this something you/Richard are thinking about offering shortly? I emailed Richard yesterday with a couple of questions, but haven't heard anything yet. BTW... are those the Standard or Deluxe sliders??

Edit: Nevermind... they look like Standards since its all round tube.

I really like the floor plate idea in between the slider openings. In fact, I have been wanting to do that for quite some time now, only with smooth material (thin steel). My need would not be for grip, rather it would be for reduction of mud flinging all over the side of my rig. While that looks cool, as you know it is a real pain to clean. Plus Jackie gets mad when she gets mud on her clothes.

Maybe I do need to take you up on the scab plate offer.

 

The design and manufacturing of the sliders are 100% the property of Stubbs Welding- I was fortunate to be able to work with him since we now own a 2005 Taco Double Cab!

The floor plate being added to them is solely being done by me. The three pieces I added last night took me over 4 hours...and I still have one left to add on this slider, 4 on the other. Even if I had a plasma cutter, it would be time consuming because I don't want to over heat the sliders while welding them.

Weekend update:

The second slider warped badly while welding in the panels. It bowed about an inch- looked terrible. So, figured I'd nothing to loose by trying to straighten it. I gave it room to arch down an inch in the center- drove the big block GMC up, watched it deflect, backed off it, and was pleasently surprised at the results. Did the first slider too...worked equally well!

Next was two coats of primer, two coats of dark grey Hammerite. Painted the back side Saturday night, the top side Sunday. Sunday morning, I laid a heavy bead of clear silcone caulking around the inside edges to prevent gunk from getting under the lip between the plate and tube. Hopefully this will prevent rust later. Didn't get'm mounted, but they are complete and ready to go. The temps were real cool all weekend, so the paint took a long time to dry.

Hope to get'm mounted Tuesday night.

A couple night time garage pic's- not the best, I'll get some better shots this weekend. Still need to add some kicker bars for support, but I wanted the sliders on before we head out for a short vacation to Tombstone.

I've included a picture of the exhaust routing. This is the only real complaint I've got on the truck so far. I'm gonna be going to see the best exhaust guy in AZ., Bill Keeling at Northern Arizona Exhaust about re-routing the left side pipe.

i was just noticing the exhaust, seems like slight design oversight for a vehicle thats supposed to have an availible "off-road" package. That thing will get bashed to hell

Now I understand why he doesn't offer sliders w/ plating. It would add at least 8 hours to the cost...probably more. Plus the cost of the 1/8" floor plate came to $60.00 for a 10" x 8' piece.

And, if they warp too badly, and can't be straightened, your screwed...

 

Yea... I know, but the plating looks sweet and serves a real purpose in protecting the paint from gravel, road salt, etc. I just contacted Richard the other day about Standards...
