So far, the new Detroit Electrac is only available for the Dana 44's. But I'm very interested in this new locker for my 3rd generation 4-Runner, aren't you? I'm thinking if we got enough forum members to email them, we might get them to make us all a locker. What do you think?

 

I think its going to take quite a few more people than just a few members on this board to convince them to make one. There was a thread on another message board about this locker and a few people emailed them, and they responded back saying they did not plan on building one for Toyotas. Just slap a ARB or factory elocker in there and call it a day.

 

Can I get a factory elocker for my 1998 4-Runner? How much and what's the part number? Is it as good as the ARB?

You surely can! Here's Phongs write-up on exactly how he did it. An electric locker has a few advantages over the ARB. One would be with an ARB you need an air source. If you get a leak your screwed. If the compressor dies your screwed. The ARB requires air to stay engages. If the electric one dies it will stay engaged. All the electric part does is engage and disengage it. I'm sure there are lot of ARB fans out there too. I'm just repeating what I have seen written in the past on here(Matt ).

 

I also rang Trachtec from Oz awhile back but no deal. Its much like ARB with the IFS front locker. There are a lot of other models with more demand.

But a problem is the Toy is a complete unit that is fitted from the front into a solid housing, whereas the Dana is fitted from the rear and has a rear cover plate. It is this rear cover plate that is replaced as it contains the locking actuating mechanism, hence the Toy housing would need a lot of modification or a redesign of the locking mechanism to suit, which is hardly likely.

I must have an LSD in the rear but I also wanted the ability to lock and when these were announced some time ago I was over the moon. I was looking forward to retaining the excellent Truetrac but having a locker.

But I don't accept no as an answer and I will get what I want. I have ordered an Electrac for my 4Runner, LOL.

There were some rumors a while back that said Toyota threatened to sue anyone that tries to make an electric locker for Toy diffs. Toyota already makes the best one out there anyway. I can look up the part numbers but you will need to know what gear ratio you currently have.

Toy E-lockers came in 4.10, 4.30, 4.56 ratios and possibly a 3.93 for 2WD PreRunner Tacomas. They can be found in junkyards for $300-$500. Check Phong's write up or search for electric locker install.

If you're going to be getting the ARB for the front, you might as well go ARB in the rear also. It makes more sense using the compressor for both lockers. This also saves you from the hassle of wiring the electric locker. Of course, this creates a single point of failure but ARBs are pretty reliable.
