Question for you 22R experts.

Question for you 22R experts.
After puting a head gasket on a 22R I heard what I thought was a knocking noise so I pulled the engine and put new rod bearings in it. After I put the new rod bearings in it is still making a knocking-chattering sound however it does not do it constanty. When you turn it off it makes the chattering sound (like compressed air comming out of the side) the last few revolutions of the motor shutting down. When the truck is making the noise it still runs good other than the raising hell sound. The truck has plenty of fire and good fuel. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
What is wrong with this engine?
Thanks

Fuel cut solenoid?

there is a solenoid that allows fuel cutoff at certain times.... also being a carb, they are really sensitive to weather changes.. whenever the weather goes from clear and sunny to rainy, or to cold, i have to do a little tinkering to get it to work better....

i am still leaning towards incorrect idle speed, or mixture adjustment, bad fuel cut solenoid, or a vacuum leak... when my truck was 180* off in timing after i did my head works, it would almost start but then make a psssshhhhh sound after i let of the starter..... found it to be part of the vacuum system making the noise..... but i flipped the dist 180* and all was fine....
