Hood scoops-Factory Option?

Did Toyota ever offer the hood scoop as an option for the NA engines, was it only for the s/c engines, or what? I mean installed at the factory/dealer, not a parts counter thing. I always figured the scoop meant a s/c, but apparantly that's not the case since there's quite a few peeps on here with the scoop and no s/c.

I am assuming you are talking about the hood scoop for the 4runners. The hood scoop is an additional item that was included in the Sports Edition 4 runner. Alot of people here have bought the hood seperately and installed it by themselves. The hood scoop is purely cosmetic as it is non-functional.

Having a hood scoop doesnt mean that the 4runner is supercharger, nor is it required to have a hood scoop to install and s/c.

he is correct, it was only in 99-02 Sport Editions for 3rd gens. It serves absolutely no purpose. Hood scoop does not mean it has S/C, we just got the hood, nothing more. It is originally made for turbo diesel models in Japan

Not only does the hood scoop NOT mean its supercharged, their were no supercharged models from the factory in the first place. The supercharger is aftermarket, even if you get a TRD unit. Dealer installed or do-it-yourself.

Ah, I see. I thought the scoop was required to clear the s/c. I knew the s/c itself wasn't a factory option. I just noticed a lot more scoops around here than I figured there would be if it was only to clear the s/c. Guess not. Thanks. Anybody know how much the 3rd gen SE weighs? I could search it I suppose...

I can see why they are popular. The scoop for the Highlander edition 4Runner was perfect - the best one I've ever seen. I wanted one soooo bad but with no 5 speed available no sale. EVER. (Not dissing autos, I just like to shift...) I thought about putting one on the flamed rig but it would cost about what the truck's worth to repaint the hood...

There's a '99 SE manual for sale right now on this board and I just looked at a 2000 SE with a 5 speed just yesterday here in Denver.

Yeah, I was just looking at that black one in southern Cal that's in the for sale area. I'd love to have it, but I don't need another street vehicle right now, in fact I am selling a couple (anyone want to buy a classic convertible?) to make room and get some cash together.

I meant the last time I was looking at new ones at dealers, musta been around 2001 or so, there were no longer any 5speed 4Runners. I was hoping to find a 5sp v6 doublecab, but nope. They had this georgeous black 4Runner with a scoop, I got the mean screaming GOTTAHAVEITS but wasn't interested in an auto or in buying used at the time. I was driving a 98 F150, I ended up keeping my truck and that was a good thing because not long after I bought a fairly large sailboat and now I need that fullsize truck... it all works out in the end!
