90 vs 95 rear axle

Feels good. I've been lurking here for a while reading but finally registered as I have a question to ask. (Yotatech.com is now in the "rotation" of sites I check through the day for new news.)

I've recently purchased a 90 2 door 4cyl 5spd. I have a problem with the rear pinion bearing (I can grab the rear of the driveshaft and shake it beyond the U joint) I'm looking to replace the entire axle as I can't tell if all the gears are destroyed and would rather not wait til its apart to find out.

I have found an axle for a 95 with a bent axle tube, I should be able to use the axle tube & axle from my 90 rear end to replace it then put that on the truck.

Does anyone know of a reason why this wouldn't work? I've looked at the diagram for the 93 Truck I saw linked here and it looks like it would work. Any ideas are appreciated.

Why don't you just replace the 3rd member? Also, you didn't say whether you have 4wd or 2wd. If 4wd, make sure both diff gear ratios are the same.

Its a 4WD, and both are 4.10s (mine and the bent one).

The only reason I could think of just replacing the whole thing and not the 3rd member is labour costs. I have to be away next week and won't have time to do this myself as I need it when I get back and it didn't seem any cheaper to just replace the member then the whole thing. If it should be I would do that. Any thoughts?

Just replace your 3rd member, that's much easyer and cheaper if you're paying for labor.

Hmmm...
Lets see.....assuming that the drive shaft is already disconnected.....
1) replacing the third required that you drain axle oil, undo the brakes, move both axles outward, take out the third, do the same on the other axle, swap the third, put every thing back together. no need to remove the axle assem from truck.
2) replacing the axle assembly and swap the axle tube... loosen the ubolts, undo the brakes, move the whole axle assembly out....remove the axle tube and axle on the side that bent.... remove the axle tube on the original axle assembly........man...

I think there's more work to swap the whole axle assem. than to just replace the third....

Hope that help.

After checking aparently there are no axle tubes on my rear end meaning I couldn't use the one from the 95. Its all one piece. and then the third sits in that. Don't know if that is better or worse.

Just swap thirds. It's way easier and gonna be a lot cheaper in the end, as long as the gear ratios match.
