Any one rember what kit number people have been using to lock the rears of thier '97 2wd 4runners. I know it was some Detroit Locker, But I cant rember the part numbers. Hopefully people can come up with some matches or part numbers that I can use to lock it up, thanks

 

Why lock a 2wd......burnouts?

 

A locked 2WD is worlds better than a 2WD with open diffs!!!

Burn outs, never I no longer can affor to buy tires. The reason I want to lock the rear is so I can hit some trails here in hawaii. TTORA goes on some minor trail runs, in which I would love to go on. IM just afraid that if I hit thoes trails with my 2wd with nothing to help me, Im gonna get stuck or burn up somthing.

Please please does anyone know the kit number for the correct detroit true-track or any other cheap locker I can put in.

Its cool, man. I have done a few burnouts. Kinda scary to see $200 tires melting. I wish I could buy car tires for $60 and melt thoes into the ground

 

what rear end does your truck have?

my 1985 4x2 has the 8" rear and im going to be locking that up soon....

 

Just swap in an e-locked axle. It's really not that hard. Now, finding one in HI is going to be another story!

You will need the 4WD/ABS ECU and switch from the donor, or a wiring kit from inchworm.

I could swap out a rear in about 3 hours or less now that I have done it.

 

I was thinking about doing the elocker swap. I have found lockers with some wiring, but no complete axle. For example:

Personally, I would hold off until I could find an entire axle. Just make sure you get the gearing right, or you will have to do the front too - like me.

 

When I used to be a mechanic it was great (back when I had a 400HP 1977 camaro with NOS).....we used to go out to the scrap tire pile, mount a the best set we could find and do doughnuts till the tires were showing metal, then repeat. It made one HELL or a smokeshow. It was fun when you are only 19 or 20.....

e-locker would be nice, but like others have said, it will be hard to find an e-locker in HI. another solution would be to install an ARB air locker. thats what i did. sorry to say though, it still left me wanting more, so i did a 4wd conversion. its not for everyone, but once you start getting serious about wheeling, there is no point in continuing with 2WD, locked or not. at least thats what i decided

I was checking out the arb air lockers, but its not in my budget. I have some connections over at 4wheelparts thats where most of my stuff comes from. I know some where on the forums I know someone used the detroit true trak. Thats in my budget, I just gotta find the part numbers. So I can be ready to hit the trails once it stops raining (in hawaii it rains pretty much all year long). The air gets a little colder, IM gonna hit the trail.

 

No...haven't had time with work, school, church, etc. Oh, and did I mention that my garage is currently 110°?
